I'm in the market for a new car.

I would like something with a high miles/km per gallon,

I'd also like something with 4 doors.

I've no idea when it comes to cars.

    Any tips/ideas?

    Cheers

Diesel Fiesta or Clio or the like I would think if you don't need a big car. Go to Focus, i30, Megane size than if that size will do. Diesel of course for max mpg :)

What kind of anual mileage and driving do you do? If you are only doing small mileage around town then recommending a diesel car will be pointless as you will to drive it alot to make the savings at the pump work out. Modern diesels also come with potential expensive repair bills. Things such as dual mass flywheels, turbos, injectors and diesel particulate filters all can have short lifespans and expensive to repair/replace. Modern diesels also hate short stop/start journeys.

If you are doing alot of town driving then maybe a hybrid would do or even a supermini is very economical if you don't need the space.

Why do people always go on about DMF going in diesels? Some petrols have them and yeah when they go it is expensive but I would expect the clutch to go first.

They don't go quickly. Wouldn't worry about the turbo too much either. Injectors is the part I usually hear about going. Never the DPF either except for on boards.

I had to replace a DPF on my old car last year due to the previous owner doing nothing but short trips. Cost me €900, I'm not making stuff up here just to increase my post count.

Renault 1.5 dci engine is more economical than psa group 1.6 hdi engine with less performance. For your budget you can find a low mileage megane with toys if you like them. \If you are ok with size vw/seat/skoda 1.4 tdi engine is also offers a lot of economy.

Have to agree with above poster re: Hybrid. I just got rid of this car -
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Honda/Civic/HYBRID-E/201050200596648/advert?channel=CARS

and bought a 2008 Laguna dCi needed the extra room for kiddie number 3. Whilst the Laguna is good on diesel, without a shadow of a doubt the Civic was far better on petrol. Just before the last fuel price hike, a full tank (€65 - small tank) used to do us for 3 weeks easy in the Civic. We're now putting € 80 fortnightly in the Laguna for the exact same journeys. If I recall the trip computer had averaged 52.8mpg in the Civic over the last 4000 miles just before I moved it on. Its well worth a look and I can honestly say I'd happily take it back and live with the smaller boot !!!!

No problem on a run. In the mid 50s around town. It's looking like I will buy the car off her myself as I don't want it to go out of the family. The cream/black interior is only on the 2003 model.

Can I ask why you got rid of it in the end? What was the car like to drive on open roads, did it feel underpowered in any way.

Not looking for a speedster, just something that has a bit of power for overtaking from time to time.

PM me if you would prefer.

Getting 'rid' may have sounded a bit harsh, I just needed a bigger car is all. Would have been cheaper to get the snip I reckon. The wife drove it mostly on a mix of 100 km/h roads and 80 km/h back roads and power wise it was fine. On the few occasions I drove it I found it ok fully loaded (the boot, not me). It did lack a bit of power as the gearing is very long for economy so on long uphill motorway stretches you could find yourself changing down. It doesn't mind being revved all that much if you do need it to change pace quickly for overtaking, but its no SiR ! Changed the 8 (yes eight) iridium spark plugs and found it pulled a little better too. It runs on 0W-30 oil which is quite hard to come by and expensive, I found Honda the cheapest for it ! Great car and super spec ! Easy on brake pads as it uses re-generative braking to charge the battery. The newer model (06 on) is auto only AFAIK, this was pertly due to people not getting the claimed MPG with the manual box..... I'd take her back in a heart beat, no not the wife, the car !!!! Hope this helps !!!

I think some people have gone totally mad now going for diesels, trying to save anywhere they can, logic diesel is cheaper than petrol! Diesel cars are more expensive and if you are not doing highish mileage, one issue with the diesel that you wouldn't have with the petrol and you can probably write off one or two years of fuel saving right there!

Diesels by nature are harder on the flywheel. I don't know the exact mechanics of it but basically the flywheel is there to smoothen the power being delivered and to dampen engine vibration. Diesel engine vibrate a hell of a lot, and deliver lots of torque in a big lump, which is hard on the flywheel. Manufacturers believe that Joe Public don't like the characteristics of a diesel engine so they engineer the hell out of the flywheel to smoothen them out and make them feel more like a petrol, without as much concern for longevity. So in modern diesels you end up with a fragile flywheel put under greater stresses, hence more failures.
