My salary is 19k. was told today I have to do overtime every evening for nothing. But trainees who started after me in the same firm get over time at time and a half. The only difference is that we have different managers. Can they do this? I wouldn't mind if all trainees were treated the same. Also my contract says salary for 37.5 hours per week.

    Hi Liz,

Does your contract say you are expected to work overtime?

If the only difference between you and your colleagues is that they have a different manager then it's likley you have a grievance.

As far as I remember it says payment of overtime is at the company's discretion. But surly they couldn't exploit me in that manner. Its not only an hour over time, its a couple of hours daily.

Couple of hours daily is a bit much. And again, there's only one side to the story.

I'm not saying this is the case with you, but it's possible that if someone were taking longer to complete their work (compared to colleagues) then the manager might have a case.

But, going on what you said then I'd feel hard done by.

Any chance of moving to another manager/dept.

How good of a relationship do you have with them? Do they know the other trainess are getting paid?

Don't want to give too much away as it is a small firm. there are three departments and everyone in my office has said that our department does more work than the others. Some trainees in my office spend a few hours every night for nothing. but in other sections they get time and a half. As i've recently just started was informed have to stay longer from now on. Don't think I can change department in there. I also know I have the lowest pay out of all the trainees - fact. I really don't want to be exploited.

I might be shooting way of target here and I'm not having a go at you but since your a trainee would doing overtime not be a good way of picking up extra experience?
I'm also a trainee in my job and often stay untill after 7 in the evenings or start at 6 in the mornings. I don't get paid but its good experience!

I'm a trainee in a larger accounting firm and dont get paid overtime - nobody does. But all trainees are on the same money (Slight deviation between Dublin and regions).

Im my experience we sometimes work overtime for nothing, sometimes dont, depending on the job and the manager etc. Thats fine and its part and parce of being a trainee.

However, I dont think its right that some people are being paid for it and others arent! Does the firm not have a a policy in place?

I know you dont want to rock the boat in work too much, but I dont feel its right that some people are being paid for it and others arent - surely it should be all or nothing?

I think the OP is not necessarily complaining about working OT but more the fact that she is being treated differently the other working it.

How do you know the the other trainees are getting paid for working it?

I do know its standard practice in more practises that you dont get paid for OT so if they are it would be quite unique at trainee level.

Anyway if you feel strongly about it i would firstly check your contract as if it says that you do not get paid for OT then I dont know if there is anything you can do about it. But if you are still wanting an answer then talk to your manager about it.
