Travelling to Australia via Mumbai

    Hey folks,

I need your help. I am planning on getting out of Ireland and traveling for a couple of months - going to head to Australia and NZ via Mumbai ( Indian). I will be traveling alone to Mumbai but wanted to know if its safe for female travelers? Does anyone have any suggestions for reasonably priced accommodation ? I am planning on head to Goa too - what's the best way to get there from Mumbai and places to stay?

    Thanking you all in advance.

    Peace.

    L

Moving thread as questions are based on India rather than Australia

I'm flying into Mumbai as a solo female traveller this June. I was a bit nervous: I've been to India 5 times before but never to Mumbai and I don't like not knowing a city. India in general is safe for women. They may stare but they really do have great respect for women.

What I did is go onto Couchsurfers and find someone who has loads of good recomendations. Then I wrote to them asking if I could sleep on their couch. That way I get someone who lots of other people have verified is a good person, and get to stay with a local family which I love doing.

But if that's not your thing, you could always go onto hostelworld and reads lots of reviews of guesthouses. Find one that people say is in a nice area.

I was in Mumbai a couple of weeks ago and stayed in Hotel Prosser's on Henry Road in Colaba. Cost was 600R (€10) for a double with shared bathroom. Clean place with friendly staff and very well located on the seafront just down the road from the Taj/Gateway of India. I am not sure however if they have single rooms- you could try phoning them. We looked around a bit- I don't think you will get cheaper other than the Salvation Army Hostel just up the road (didn't stay there, heard mixed things about it.) We certainly saw a hell of a lot worse for more money. Mumbai is significantly more expensive than the rest of India, incidentally.
