compared with 31042 astromaster 114 EQ...

I'm struggling as to which one I should buy? They say the more money you spend the more you get. But after reading some reviews here and there that is not always the case?

Basically I'm looking for someone who knows a bit about using both models or if they could give me a fair review of each. What are the advantages and disadvantages of both scopes?

There's a good sticky on this forum covering this....

    But, basically,

    1. get the biggest apperture you can afford.
    2. lens apperture is approx 1.5 x the equivalent mirror appeture

(So a 4 inch refractor telescope is approx equivalent to a 6 inch reflector)

    3. next....is it just for observing or for photos too?

If I had a choice of a 114 reflector of a 70 refractor I'd (just about) choose the 70mm refractor.

    BUT....I'd much rather a 130...or even better a 300mm reflector :)

(A 300mm reflector has portability issues though....)

And the spanner to twist your mind.......

Often a decent set of binoculars with a tripod is the best start!!

    Best of luck!!

Hi Peter, Thanks for all your help.

I've since went ahead and ordered the 70 EQ Astro

I'd be wanting to take photos with it. Is that possible?

Just had a look at your scope on you tube. man!!! is that not a difficult one to transport for you? and how much did it set you back?

I'm in my 20's so whilst I can just about manage it I could see it being near impossible for some to carry around

I had a 114mm reflector before that and it weighed half of what my new one does but I find the heavier it is the more stable it is which is very important when stargazing. To transport I can slide the telescope itself off the mount then close the tripod legs and off I go :)

It retails at €700+ online but I got it 2nd hand for €200 from someone who impulse bought and never used it

I'd definitely recommend if upgrading in the future to buy 2nd hand as you get alot more scope for your money and the ones in the shops are not very good
