Query about Skoda pricing

    Hey guys

My parents are looking at buying a new car and I've been encouraging them to look at a new Superb. Is there anyone here familiar with the pricing scheme Skoda operate? Is there any scope for the dealer to knock something off the list price? Does he have much of a margin to play around with?

My parents would be paying in cash, but dont think that really matters anymore!

    Cheers.

If buying straight (no trade-in) then there is plently of scope for haggling on the list price. Really depends on how good your parents are at bargining. It will vary from garage to garage but I would expect to get around 8-10% discount off the list price.

Also in my experience you will not get the best price from a garage over the phone or my email. The best advice I can give is to be sitting in front of the sales person and negotiate from there. Phone calls or emails are generally not taken seriously. Go to a number of garages to compare prices and don't be afraid to let them know you are shopping around for the best price.

You can check the prices out at www.skoda.ie and www.carzone.ie, these prices will most likely not include delivery related charges or metalic paint.

    Best of luck.

You'd be doing well to get 6 or 7% off the car, depending on which model you're going for.

Cash doesn't make much difference, a dealer will make more money if you take finance, and so may do better discount with finance.

Where ever you get prices from do NOT bypass Tarrants in Banteer.

Some dealers will want to get numbers out at certain times of the year so as such they drop their margins to shift metal.

OP, you'll be doing well as Chris said to get 5-7% off the list price.

Some dealers have much higher overheads
    IE.
    Fancy unnecessary showrooms ;)

It looks like margins were cut for Skoda dealers this year.

To make it worth the dealers while to sell a car, I'd say your looking max 6%. Margin varies car by car - more margin on the more expensive cars, tighter on the cheaper ones.

I hope your parents are not in a hurry. I was told last week that the current waiting times for a Superb Diesel were around 6 months. Apparently there is a shortage of Diesel Engines atm.

Considering that the Superb seems to be selling like hot cakes you will be doing well getting 5-6% off.

It's the manufacturers who demand dealers spend ridiculous amounts on "fancy" showrooms, AFAIK Phoenix Motors in Dublin are currently in a legal battle with Skoda over this very issue. Of all makes out there, Skoda's definitely do not need fancy showrooms, it just doesn't suit the image.

Re pricing: I know you're not trading in but as already pointed out, dealers can vary hugely on price, I was trading in an Octavia for a new one and the difference between one dealer and another for the value of my trade-in was nearly €4K so well worth shopping around and play one dealer off against the other too.

If you are any good at buying cars there is a decent discount to be had from the list price, believe me ;)

Thats what is wrong with this country....
Why in the name of good lord does any car sales need a fancy showroom

Give me the Normal showroom with some discount... Much better to deal with

It mightn't have suited the old Skodas - but the new ones are completely different animals. The Superb has all the toys, and luxury, and I'd say Skoda are going to try and make a push to have their brand perceived as a premium brand with low prices. The downside to that (Even if they're right), is that it'll be all about the Glass palaces again. The upside to that, is that there's plenty vacant around the country going cheap.

    That car costs €33,905
I don't know metallic or delivery costs, buts I'll assume €1k for both.
    Total price €34,905.

    €3k discount on €34,905 is 8.5% discount.

Now bearing in mind that you said "the guts of" 3k, we'll have to assume you got slightly less. ;) So probably more like 8% than 8.5%.

That's a surprisingly good discount - good to see it's achievable, but I don't know how often you'll see it replicated.

    Cheers for the info!

as someone who has bought one (waiting on delivery) I was even surprised as to the premium feel to it. I had a fairly strict budget and I just couldn't look past it.

as standard, Adaptive Bi-Xeons, Park Assist, SatNav, Bluetooth, leather, memory seats, leather, climate control .... and so forth.

This car is a bit of a keeper for me and the silly, unpractical car will follow in a year or so to keep me sane.

And to go from one extreme to another I am thinking of something like a Mini Cooper S Works as a weekend car, will be going down the years but something silly and unpractical but fun is what I will need.

I wil probably have to pick your brain on that one !!

I don't think there's much more left in it than Whippet got -Corkie-. Discount has been cut a bit this year so any more than that and it's not really worth the dealers while.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

They were 300 euro more for me but the car was a year newer, had less mileage, xenons, wheel upgrade and Bluetooth. That was a secondhand car though.

Not necessarily. When demand is greater than supply and you have 5 people chasing one build slot, cash is king. Why offer someone a 5 or 6% discount when someone will nearly pay full price for it. Unless you have a good relationship with that customer and he or she is a repeat buyer - you would be mad.

I assume you are talking about tarrants? if so, when they eventually got back to me with a price it was only to match the price I got in dublin. FYI, I called them on a tuesday, rep called me back friday morning ... 'very busy here this week, just working through my messages'

They wouldn't do any better than match the price I had.

that is nonsense really. If you want the car you will wait. I wouldn't pay a penny more for an earlier build slot.

It's a seriously busy dealership. The car I was buying had others interested in it. Called back the same day unannounced for a second look and it passed me on a test drive. Had it bought before it came back. Think they're the top sellers for Skoda and went out if their way with sorting things out for me. They are slightly old fashioned and you'd really need to deal face to face though.

I can't figure out how they are doing some of the prices. Even the father got a great price for a car from them and he'd be trading in an 08 2 litre petrol.

Maybe I missed it in your earlier post but who did you buy off in the end? Will be in the market for a Superb Combi 2.0TDi DSG (Elegance) soon myself.

Youre best bet is to ring/email them all.. Get a price..then start haggling..
I ended up only paying 200 in theory for the leather upgrade in my vRS octy as Tarrants beat the next best price by 500. As it is 700 to go for leather upgrade then it was only 200 of a difference
I for one will be going back to Tarrants when it comes to ordering my next car..
I Dont believe anyone will beat them as I tried every dealer in the country when ordering my current one.

I ended up ordering from Pilsen in Ballymount.

To be fair, I had done all my homework and gotten up to 5 prices from other dealers before I went in the door.

Who I bought from was really irrelevant in the wind up, it was all about $$$$.

Tempted to go Skoda myself, however the wait is worsening everytime I ask, in the space of a couple weeks it's gone from 6 weeks to 8 to 12 to now maybe 4 months.

Skoda salesmen don't seem in the best form just now, I'm getting the feeling they're losing interest in selling more cars - scrappage deals anyway. The limit on Octavia sales seems to be how many VAG are allowing into Ireland this year.

Not wanting to scaremonger but if the scrappage deal was to end in June (barring expected(?) extension) then orders any later than about now are running a risk of missing it.

    What did you order?
When I went about my car last year ( Octavia vRS td ) I was told around 8:9 weeks for delivery.
Suited me fine but ordered it on the day anyway ( 5th May 2010 )which would have gotten delivery 3 weeks too soon for me..
Tarrant's did not mind holding the car for me anyway..
I was supposed to take delivery on 21st August..
I eventually got it on October 5th..

    Glad I waited though
I would do it all again:D

Haven't ordered yet, just asking about the expected wait times if I put in an order. One garage said 12 weeks yesterday, today another said maybe 4 months. I think they don't know and are as unhappy as the buyers.

Prefer the estate which doesn't help.

Need a car soon - my own is almost dead, so may have to go to the UK and forget about the scrappage.

As far as I know the petrols are not as long a wait...
    Estate Octavia or Superb??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,712 ✭✭✭✭R.O.R

Delivery date on Superb's isn't too bad - not sure if that includes the Combi's.

Honest delivery date on an Octavia seems to be a shrug of the shoulders, accompanied by a long sigh. Unless the car is in the system (no estate's seem to be) then they haven't a clue when it will arrive.
