Iphone screen not reacting to touch

I woke up this morning and my iPhone (3GS. OS 4.0.1) wouldn't open. And by that I mean that the 'Slide To Unlock' method wouldn't react to my touch.

After finally getting it open (it will react to touch once every maybe 40 or 50 slide attempts), the lowest row of icons (Phone, iPod, Email and Safari) won't react to touch. All other apps will open fine. The phone is pretty much useless.

For about 15 mins it was back working fine but then I noticed the calibration was slightly off and then it just completely stopped working again.

I've tried resetting it but it didn't fix the problem. I tried to restore and update my phone to the latest software twice but both times I received an error message telling me it was unable to update.

It didn't receive any damage, wasn't dropped and I didn't spill anything on it. I just woke up this morning and it was like this.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
