Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I am a newbie. I have recentlt bought a Canon 550D with 2 lenses, the 18-55mm stock lens and the 55-250 EFS zoom lens. I am looking for a lense hood for one or both lenses, i.e. which canon hood can I use.. Will the same hood do both or should I use different hoods. I have plain 58mm filters on both lenses. I have looked at hoods but non of them say 58mm. Am I missing something?

No they're two different lens hoods - the hood for the 18-55 will be quite small so as not to cause vignetting at the wide end.

    Just did a quick search there; EW-60C for 18-55 & ET-60 for the 55-250mm

Do you even need a hood?

I don't mean to hack your thread.

I suppose they are intended to shield the lens from sun flare etc. But I normally have mine on to protect the glass against from accidental bangs and bumps.
Lots of people use uv filters for this, but personally I don't like them

They help improve contrast as well as reducing flare.

Allegedly they do all sorts of good things with flare & contrast - but honestly, I have often done hood on/hood off shots & you cant tell the difference most of the time.

They can help if you are shooting into v. bright light, or, if a bright light is just off to one side of the frame.

Having said all that, I will use hoods almost always when outdooors, on photowalks etc, because thy offer a certain level of mechanical protection for the lens.
