NCPS clamp cutting - what now

Last night I went to dinner with my girlfriends family. I parked the car in an ncps car park and went to dinner, only put 2 hours on the metre and we ended up going to a pub for a few drinks afterwards(I don't drink so I was driving people home later)

I forgot to go back and put more money on the metre so obviously the car was clamped when I got back around 1.30am. Obviously I was pissed off but it was my fault- I forgot to put money on it after the first 2 hours & it was 24 hour pay and display.

So I call NCPS and the automated program asked for the number on the notice - but there was no number written on it, so I press to speak to an operator- nobody answers. I call back and again nobody answers and I'm cut off.

Now I live 40km from where I was clamped, so I couldn't just get a taxi home. The girlfriends brother in law disappears and arrives back from his own jeep with an angle grinder and despite my hesitation and disagreement he proceeds to cut the link in the chain and sure enough off comes the clamp.

So question is, do I call them now and offer to pay the fine and cost of the chain or hope that since they didn't fill out their own paperwork that they might not have a record of my reg. There's no CCTV- I checked.

From my point of view I didn't mind paying the fine for my own stupidity, but since nobody took my call - I had to get home.

I'm just not sure what to do now....

I'm generally law abiding but I also feel I was distressed by the situation they forced me into by not having anyone available to remove the clamp last night so why should I pay for the chain they left me no choice but to remove.

How much is one of those chains cost anyway?
    Failed to load the poll.
