So I'm driving from Portmarnock to Baldoyle around an hour ago. I see a cyclist up ahead, so I slow down accordingly, and just as I'm about to pass the cyclist, she pulls out directly in front of me - she didn't look, didn't apologise, and didn't care when I beeped! Unreal!

And there is no way she thought I was slowing down to let her turn - she didn't signal or even look at me at any stage as I was approaching her! I only slowed down as much as I did because I saw her right leg come out!

If you were paying more attention you would have seen there was a junction up ahead of the cyclist and he or she may have turned right at it.
The cyclist should also have been on the white line so cars could pass on the left.

    Expect the unexpected.

Eh what? I obviously noticed all of that & reacted perfectly. Does it look like I hit her or something?

What a stupid response - somehow, even though I observed correctly, slowed down correctly, didn't pass her because I felt it wasn't safe - despite her never looking around, never signalling, and never acknowledging my existence - it's somehow my fault?

Get real, mate! I anticipated the hazard & situation perfectly! How you can dispute this considering there is video evidence is baffling!

So whats the problem then? The cyclist turned right. You slowed down in time and didn't hit him. Why post a non event here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,639 ✭✭✭PeakOutput

she was established on the road, she had right of way, its not possible to tell from the video weather or not she had already indicated to turn

its your responsibility to ensure its safe to overtake and you did congratulations. assuming the cyclist indicated before we can see her in the video(and i am going to assume this as any serious cyclist i have seen does) then she didnt do anything wrong either and IF you had of hit her it would have been entirely your fault

maybe he/she is reminding us that there are stupid cyclists out there and we need to be cautious:confused:

You're clearly trolling if you think she did nothing wrong in that video. Move along, troll.

OP is this thread a viral ad for Gaviscon ????:mad:

The cyclist made a mistake. He/She should have taken up a position in the centre of the road if they intended to turn right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,684 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

tbh it doesnt look as bad as you say. Its possible the cyclist was more aware of you than you think.
With cars pulling out etc, it appears that it would have been impossible for you to just have overtaken the cyclist at speed anyway and perhaps the cyclist thought they had time to pull across.
I hate cyclists btw and the cyclist should certainly have been out towards road centre line before attempting any move. It doesnt look like a near miss and I think should you have been approaching that situation without the care you did take, it would have been dangerous driving.
So you behaved properly & the cyclist was a bit dodgy but not a bad as I thought it was going to be given the thread title

I'm a troll for disagreeing with you? You get real.

At 0:06 you went slightly to the right. That gave me the impression you were going to overtake, but decided not to. There would have been an accident if you did.

you slowed down and the cyclist pulled over across???

I fail too see the problem??? now if you hadn't slowed down that'd be a different story but you were slowing down so the cyclist obviously assumed you were stopping for some reason... nothing to be seen here really

    don't see the problem really

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,445 ✭✭✭Absurdum

cyclist should have looked behind before moving out from the left

Am I the only one ITT not smoking crack?
So it's okay to be cycling on the left of the road, not look around at all, not signal your intent to turn right, and just pull across the path of a moving car? Riiiiight...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

You did the right thing and didn't hit the cyclist.
Can't be too careful when passing them, if they sway into your path the bike can scratch the car ;)

Looks like it - next time you obviously need to plough through her in order to make a more dramatic video for boards. It was a stupid thing for the cyclist to do, and I consider she showed a complete lack of awareness or self preservation. Congrats on not smacking into her.

That was a stupid move by the cyclist to be honest, I cycle regularly and always try and have a good perception of what traffic is around me. Even on straight main roads I continually check behind me, if you've no idea whats happening on the road on which your traveling then your asking for trouble.

At the end of the day if I'm in an accident, whether I'm in the right or the wrong, it's gonna be me that's left worse off than the car!

In saying that, coming up to a junction you had no opportunity to overtake without leaving very little room for the cyclist if he/she had continued straight. I would have slowed to the speed of the cyclist then overtaken once past the junction, it adds about 5 seconds to your journey and eliminates the risk of occurrences such as in your video.

The video isn't good enough to tell if she had her arm out when you were further away but if you take it that she did then there was absolutely nothing wrong done IMO. Cyclists will generally indicate early cos you can't brake and signal at the same time, so every possibility she signalled when you were further away...
Not best practice not to move out to the right but maybe she didn't want to have to stop in the middle of the road, especially with you coming up behind her or though that one of the cars coming from the turn may swing out over the line, which is common enough...

Stupid move by the cyclist, not looking or indicating from the looks of things. Not sure what the point of posting this is though, I was out cycling and driving earlier and there were plenty of idiots on the road as normal.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,149 ✭✭✭skyhighflyer

Bad move by the cyclist, but if you don't want people giving their own views on this (some of which you may not like), why would you post it on an online forum?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,490 ✭✭✭pegasus1

and didn't care when I beeped!

maybe she was listening to an ipod and didn't have a care in the world !

i was driving home one night N10 speed limit 100, and only caught in time an idiot on a bike with no lights at all in the middle of my lane and had to slap the brakes on..he remained cycling as if he was doing no wrong for another 30 seconds then turned right, little bollox!

if there was another car coming towards me at the time he would have been hit at 100 kph...

its not smart i will give you that

    BUT

she is a road user just like a car, just because she is being polite and cycling on the left doesnt mean you can treat her like a lamppost that you just drive by

she is on the road, ahead of you, she has right of way

if it was a motorbike would you have set up to over take her so early? i doubt it

    +1 On that!

Can't fully tell from the video as its not clear enough, but it looks to me as if the cyclist was in the middle of the road with her arm out, heard your car coming, then (possibly) panicked, moved back in and then pushed herself along with a leg out, which in my opinion was not her intention but merely a spilt second reaction to the car(you) coming up behind her?

I believe that section of road is a 50kph speed limit? (i will check this)
    How fast were you going?

OP - what do you mean when you say the cyclist "literally" pulled out in front of you. Did you think there could be some metaphorical misinterpretation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,982 ✭✭✭Caliden

Alot of high horses in this thread.
Cyclist was wrong on several accounts and the OP was lucky that he was ready for the cyclist to do something silly.

As for those wondering what was done wrong, I suggest you go out on a bike and do what the cyclist in the video did.
Let me know how you get on....

And THIS my friends is why we take the lane and dont leave you much room to pass us on the road.

Forest Master = Major Fail. You didnt have enough space to pass that cyclist even if they didnt turn right. The other car was blocking your path. You were driving far too fast.

+1 as shown by the sudden jamming on the brakes at the last second. A bit of proper anticipation would have avoided the need for it.

I don't know what video you watched because the OP clearly slowed down as there was not enough room to pass the cyclist due to oncoming traffic. I presume the OP was planning to overtake the cyclist after the junction when the road ahead was clear. There was no indication from the cyclist nor did she look behind before crossing the road.

The cyclist was well in the wrong though. He should've signalled and moved to the centre as previously stated. He won't last too long if he keeps that up.
