Thats the problem, its a 1 litre with no power, meaning that you have to drive it hard to get anywhere at a reasonable pace.
What sort of roads does she do most of her milage on?

Say a litre of fuel is c. €1.45. €50 buys 34.48 litres, or about 7.59 gallons. 300 miles means c. 39.52 mpg which isn't that bad tbh.

Brim the tank and get a more accurate reading next time.

It's not that bad at all! I get about 24mpg...

40 MPG for a polo is normal. I have driven one all across Europe and 40 is the best it will do.

I calculated before and it was around 39-40mpg for the 1.2 Polo. It would probably be fine until taken to a motorway, 120km/h seems to reduce the mpg more than lower speeds.

I can squeeze nearly 40 MPG out of my 1.4 Golf sometimes using some fuel saving tips, It's not the quickest either especially when Your taking it easy to save more petrol. if I'm not in a rush I try to practice the techniques.

Maybe have a look at these and see if applying some will improve Your MPG,
