I've bought a great wedding dress from the US, it'll be valued as $350 on the box, & it'll be delivered by An Post, as I heard if FedEx or another shipping company deliver it, I'm guaranteed to pay full customs. Dis any other girl have her dress delivered this way, & did you have to pay a large customs charge????

You can pay customs regardless of what option you choose. And the total value of the customs & duties amount will be 40% of your entire order (merchandise + shipping).

They seem to be checking everything now! They work out the tax on the value of the item + delivery + any additional charges so it will be the cost your dress + postage if you get caught at customs.

Hi, I bought my dress in the US and it arrived just after Christmas delivered by An Post...the Postman even said "I know what this is, best of luck" at the door, and I never I got charged customs.
Now having said that, I got my aunt in New York to send it over to me by USPS and she took all the invoices and tags off it and repackaged it for me.
It was torture waiting and wondering whether I would get caught. I hope it all goes well.

I had a package arrive today with Fedex, with a value of $200 dollars on the box, was certain that I'd be stung, as, as another poster pointed out, they are pulling everything now, but I wasn't caught at all:eek:

Just to be on the safe side, I would still ring customs and see what the charge would be if you were caught(they are very helpful if you ring them), and then factor that into your budget.

Best of luck, and I hope that you DON'T get caught;)

Hey any update on the dress?
What website did you buy from?

I bought my bridesmaid dresses from www.gownsales.com. I think one of teh ladies who works there is Irish. She put the value of the dresses at half what they actually were on the postage slip and also said there was samples in there. I had to pay €35 which I think was 20% of teh value on the slip. I had to have the exact cash when going to collect them from the postal depot.

Just be careful there, sometimes what can happen is that Fedex will pay the customs charges on your behalf when bringing the item into the country. They will then send you an invoice within 30 days for this amount.

Happens quite regularly, when I buy stuff from abroad and where Fedex are used.
