I'm told that on one particular COMBO STB,
if you record a channel with subtitles on it will NOT have subtitles when you play it back.

Do any DTT STBs record subtitles ?

You can record subtitles on some PC /HTPC based systems. I don't know of a set-box PVR that does, but unlike VHS and Teletext subtitles, it's very very feasible. Just some extra software.

Are there actually any DVB subtitles being broadcast on Saorview yet? My Freeview HD box says "No DVB subtitle"

Yes there are according to LG 42LD450, and stream analysis from several posters, but not all programs. The subtitles oddly are delivered by Teletext "presentation" though.

    Thanks Watty,

That figures. Freeview HD boxes seem to be MHEG5 only and don't display the teletext on TV3 & TG4 neither.

Hopefully TV3 and TG4 will add MHEG5 applications and Text soon. There is likely to always more variety and cheaper "Freeview HD" boxes and PVRs than Saorview ones. Also in East coast / border areas receiving NI HD after 2012 and IOM or Welsh HD and regular Freeview now, a "Freeview HD" box or TV is needed. Soarview gear can receive basic Freeview I think, but definately not "Freeview HD" without a DVB-T2 tuner.

Did it not work with 'Super VHS' ?

What about using the TV's own teletext decoder - is traditional teletext (i.e. WST/old teletext/"analogue" teletext) passed by these UK boxes in the VBI to the TV on a SCART connection?

3e also only has traditional teletext.

The Teletext isn't in the picture on DVB. It's a separate DVB stream. Sky boxes insert this into analogue picture, I've not seen other boxes that do. Likely some do. Also Teletext doesn't work over HDMI as there is nowhere to put it, other than the Setbox putting it into the picture, no VBI. Only works via SCART/Composite in VBI.

Never tried it on S-VHS. I could actually test that. But (a) Not many people have S-VHS recorders, (b) Even fewer have S-VHS tapes.

    Thanks for your replies :)

Looks like I'll have to be content with having subtitles when watching live :(

    I can live with that.

Most FTA satellite boxes (Televes etc) do. The much maligned Lidl (Comag etc) stuff did as well.
These also had built in teletext decoder as well as outputting teletext in the VBI to the TV(s) connected via SCART and RF (Televes 7118 has RF out)
The only FTA box I personally have come across that does not is the 'Ross' brand

Can anyone tell me what is the correct name for Saorview subtitles?
I mean UK Freeview use DVB Subtitle but not in Eire, It seem to use Teletext subtitle.
My LG LF7700 will not decode Saorview subtitle
So I need some more info before I contact LG and see what they can do for me as my dad need the subtitles to enjoy the programs
Can anyone tell me the reference number or code or even what sort of DVB is it base on.
    I hope someone can help
    TIA
