That right there is list of people who I have to vote for in my area (ballyfermot).

Now I've been living there over 20 years and I have never seen or heard of most of them. I seen Michael Connaghan once but that's only when he knocked on the door looking for a vote. I think I seen Michael Mulcahy once but that was in the paper. The only other I seen was Aengus who I've seen a few times doing work around the area.

Which begs the question.... what makes any of these people worthy of yours or my vote?

Does the ability to have your face printed on a poster qualify them for this? As this is the most that most people would see of them.

Recently I tried to understand the mentality of the Parish Pump voter and coming on here it is a general concenus that this is the worst thing to happen to Irish politics.

    But...

Maybe its not as bad as people think.

It's just simple human psychology really... people want to feel like their problems matter. If your local politican can get that sorted for you then why would you not vote for them? It would not make any sense right?

The ability to view things from a national perspective is a worthy trait which I personally believe all politicians should aspire to have but the very nature of our democracy denies us this.

Which brings me back to my original point.

When I go into the ballot booth and have that list of names in front of me I will look at that and say to myself,"Who do I believe has done the most good work in my area and should be rewarded with the vote?" After all a vote is a precious thing. But to be honest I can't decide because I honestly couldn't tell you what they have done.

And that's all we can really judge them on... What they've done. Manifestos are not realpolitik. And anyone who believes anything on them is crazy.

So how do you decide who to vote for?
