Why is the Ceann Comhairle automatically deemed elected to the next Dail without having to be voted in?Seamus Kirk has the luxury of being able to sit on his ass in the knowledge that he will definitely be back in Leinster House on 9th March.I think that this badly needs to be changed.

Absolutely. Nobody should be guaranteed a place in the Dáil.

It is to avoid improper conduct and ensure impartiality. If the Ceann Comhairle saw his own seat at risk by acting in a non-partisan manner, then it would influence action and decisions in a natural way.

So by ensuring the seat for the Ceann Comhairle; it works to remove any possible undue political pressure on the person himself to continue on and act independently.

I am in full support of this aspect of our Constitution.

The position of the Ceann Comhairle is that of impartial adjudicator. Of course this rarely happens thus, we usually get a partial Ceann Comhairle who is never above politics, as it were.

I think the role and basis of choosing the Ceann Comhairle needs to be reviewed, but the need for him/her to be returned automatically seems to make sense, if they are to be above politics.

Why isn't this position given to somebody outside of politics?
