Looking for any tips in improving site security after a few lead valleys were taken from the roof of our new build last night. Its in a quite village but not near lights, power etc.. so would have taken 2 lads about 30 mins; they even used the site wheelbarrow to cart it away. thieving feckers.

Suggestions welcomed in how to stop it reoccuring later in the job

Are you employing a contractor because site security normally falls within his remit. (im assuming here your the client and not the contractor)

Its a self build so no main contractor, just each trade hired in

BigGeorge, did they damage any of the slates?. Theieving feckers is correct.
I have a security fence across the front of mine , locked. I have no copper in my house, but am putting in an alarm shortly....

    Big George,
Best solution I found was my "nosey neighbour".:D We were living off site for 4 months.
Seriously, he was better than any guard dog or alarm. We have a LOT of valleys, i.e. A LOT of lead. Few nights he heard noises, was out here in a shot. Only thing that got nicked on us was my "homer simpson style" diy temporary post box:o
Kind p***ks that you'd love to find half way through their trade:mad:

Had one job down in waterford for a rebuild of housing for homeless people. They stripped the pipes out one night so the contractor paid two travellers to sit in the house each night..Nothing was robbed again!:D

Yes, in this case the "house sitters" probably just asked their pals no to rob the house they were guarding!

It was a clean job, they their way up to roof level on the scaffolding in the pitch dark and just pulled it out. Knew what they were doing & absolutely no damage.

Thanks for the suggestions - keep them coming

just a comment, but if you mean commercially then fine but would you expect a builder to look after security on a once off house build? In what capacity other than a gate!

If you hire a builder to build your house, they are required to look after security, Infact, techincally the client is not even allowed on site.

In the capacity that he is contractually obliged to cover all risks on site such as theft, fire etc.
It's up to him to provide any security he see's fit or not, as he would be covering any losses - if the contract includes for this.
Anyway - not applicable in the OP's case.

CCTV cameras and PIR activated site lighting is a very good deterrent.
Signage indicating monitored and offsite recording of CCTV is a must, and should be positioned at the site entrance.

Also, in the current climate, it's not always the usual stereotypical group in society that is responsible for site thefts, and it's unfair to always tar them with the same brush.

is it easy to enter the site? my own place was a bit off the beaten track, but still had double gates and had a chain and padlock on them every night. in the scheme of things, its nothing huge, but it still deters people from wandering in. just makes it that more difficult.

Was just about to ask about site security myself. Just about to start my own self build in Cork. Where would I get building site fencing ? Better to buy or rent ?

Best system I have used is Netwatch does cost a few quid but even in bad areas it has prevent thefts for me no connection to the company just a customer

what sort of cost would you be looking at for that ?

In my own build I had 1 x CCTV camera on a pole, and told the builder it was there, and recording. Didn't tell him about the 2nd one, though........

Came in rather useful when the claim for 'extras' came to pass, and the ubiquitous measurement of hours-on-site.........;)

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

The system costs depend on number of cameras. For complete security in a square site you would need 8 cameras and sensors. Cameras record 24 hours a day and can be viewed Live online. At night cameras turn into alarm system and any movement on sensor is viewed live by call centre who can communicate directly with third parties insure

Cost of monitoring was circa 20 euro per day

You own the equipment for good and an 8 camera system will cost about 10k including wiring. You do need an Internet line to operate the system

    1. security gate
    2. we used a sensor light, but we did have temp power
    3. we put up cameras (they weren't working but as a deterent)
    4. get a big dog
    5. we blocked our entrance for a while near the end of the build by parking a car up to the gate overnight (we live nearby though)
