anyone know if there is any good free software out there that allows conversion of avi files to mpeg4 for iphone. i have tried a few and although they are ok there is sound lag of at least 0.5secs which is a pain. im also looking for software that will allow conversion of your own dvds to mpeg 4 but most wont do they job as they are copy protected.

Handbrake will do this, and it has iPhone presets if you don't know what you are doing.

You can rip your DVDs to your hard-drive with DVDFab HDDecrypter. Once you have it on your HDD as a VIDEO_TS folder, Handbrake will convert it to other formats no problem.

i have handbrake and thats the good one. the picture is great but it will only convert about 4 mins of the file and stops. is this because you need to purchase it.

redkawa is what I use, interface not the best, ad supported I think, works well though for me when I need it

dvddecrypter needs to be used first to convert dvd

Handbrake is free, open source software. You do not need to purchase it.

Also, if you have VLC installed, you don't need to use HDDecrypter as Handbrake will use VLC's libraries to circumvent the copy protection.

If it stops after 4 minutes there is a problem somewhere. What are you trying to convert - if it is a DVD then you need to use the 'Folder' option when choosing your source. And check the Title and Chapters options to make sure you are not just picking one chapter of the movie.

If its an AVI file and its crashing after 4 minutes then it is probably corrupt.

If you have a 3GS or iPhone 4, download VLC for iphone or CineXPlayer. VLC was free but i'm not sure if its still in the app store (they pulled it themselves at one point because apples ts & cs were at odds with its own open source licence) You'd definitely get it using installous or cydia (i'm sure its cool to mention installous cos its not really piracy when it was a free app and having it in installous would be fine licence-wise)

This thread will probably be moved but for your future reference theres a dedicated Apple Media Device forum here

This topic has probably been discussed there before so remember to search before you post
