After six long years of fun and success, Guitar Hero has been officially axed by its publishers.

The creators of World Of Warcraft, Call Of Duty, and of course Guitar Hero, Activision Blizzard has cut the popular music game, and is also cutting up to 500 people from it’s global work force of 7,000 people.

When asked for a reason for axing the Guitar Hero franchise, Activision Blizzard simply stated, “The popularity of music themed video games has faded.”

This also means that the relatively new game, DJ Hero will be axed as well, and on a different note, so is the True Crime Franchise. This does not mean however that the games will stop being sold.

Up to fourteen version of Guitar Hero have been released since its first launch in 2005. These games ventured from Guitar Hero 1, 2, and 3, to celebrity editions such as the Metallica edition, to the full band set of Guitar Hero World Tour and all of its add ons such as Guitar Hero Monsters of Rock.

However Activision’s publishing chief Eric Hirshberg said, “We simply cannot make these games profitable based on current economics.”

According to the company, the game is far to expensive to manufacture when licensing fees for songs and hardware costs are taken into account. All the microphones, guitars, and copyright costs have been taking their toll.

Viacom also sold the unit behind the Rock Band games last year for the same reason. Rock Band was the first music based video game to introduce a full band kit.
