Give us something to work with...

Did you try updating with a USB from the PS website? http://uk.playstation.com/ps3/support/network/detail/item48612/PlayStation-3-System-Software-updates/

I fix ps2 and ps3's as a hobbie and i can tell you straight out that you will need to back-up you're games/save-games to an external source (usb-key) and then do a full format of the hard disk-drive.

when connected to the internet and the firmware takes ages to update and sticks on a low percentage and will not go any further then there are errors on the hard-disk this is the reason to do a full format of the hard disk-drive to fix the errors' as the firmware download/install will not be able to install on a bad hard-drive. if you have a corrupted hard-drive anyway' you will notice slowness and choppyness in games or the odd crash.

from the amount of ps3's i have had to repair around 40% of them had errors on the hard-drive which would not allow for firmware installation.(and will not allow for firmware installation from a usb-key either) so this is why you will need to do a full format.

but even doing this full format of the hard-drive' the problem might still exist in which case you will more than likely need to purchase a new hard drive. the main other problems are the ps3 not reading discs but thats usually an easy issue to fix as the lazer/lazers in older ps3's get dirty and need manual cleaning.

if the ps3 cannot accomplish the format'or gets stuck halfway through and will not go any further then purchase a new laptop hard-drive. the PlayStation 3's original hard drive operates at 5400 RPM so i would recommend you use the same speed for compatability.

plus if you do decide to purchase a new hard drive it has to be a sata laptop hard-drive. an ide laptop hard drive will NOT work.

if the format does not work i recommend (western digital) SATA laptop hard-drive 160gb or above but with 5400rpm. install that if needed and connect to the net and install the firmware and you're good to go. hope that helps good luck..

ps. I wouldn't bother with the ps3's safe-mode option if the format doesn't work. I wouldn't recommend that part unless you know what you are doing.

thats grand, that it was only the internet connection there. normally when you have a good internet connection and the firmware will not update this is normally 99% of the time, errors on the hard drive. good to see you got it sorted anyway.

I tell ya, I switched from XBox to PS3 there a few months ago, and the problems with PS3 software are unbelievable!! (I.e games stopping / crashing, HDMI compatibility issues)

It's been a while since I've owned a Sony machine, and the standards really haven't lived upto my expectations!!

    Mini-rant over...

Glad you got your machine updated!
