Scrap Dealer Newcestown, Co. Cork - funny deal?

I have been to a Scrap Dealer (Sean O'Brien me thinks) looking for a rim for my Opel. I had phoned him a day ago and he told me he had one.
Unfortunately the one he had was not the correct one. It would had fitted but it was kind of different to the original rims.
I paid him 25 Euro but after short reflexion sitting in my car I asked him to take it back. He gave me only 20 euro back saying this would be normal,
the fiver would be a handling charge for him to get the part off the shelf and hold it for me.

    i wonder is that normal?

Legally he didn't have to accept the item back so consider yourself lucky.

So is it that when I gave him the money and put the rim into my boot the deal was done? Although I had not left his premises ?

at the moment, you're down 5e, and still no rim.
You could have taken the rim, be down 25e, but have a rim to do while you look for the right one

thanks a_v525 - I did not know that he was legally right asking for this charge.
I run over one of his Gurrier dogs when driving out his yard.
I feel sorry for this now.

On purpose? Let me get this straight - you took back your €20 and then ran over his dog to punish him for not refunding you in full?

i think you should wash all the blood off your bumper and go ask for your €5 back.... you mightnt get it but you'd get the BOARDS AWARD for balls....

but you wasted this mans time ok maybe the way he went about things was a bit diffrent, but at the end of the day you wasted this mans time he put a fiver as the price of his time you wasted, you were lucky you got anything back,
its amazing the amount of wasters that come into scrapyards i spend a couple of summers working in one and saw alot.

No - i am self-employed and this for decades - what do u think how many people would phone me to ask for my advice .?? How many call to our premises ask for samples and prices and ..... they might never call back! This is part of Customer Service.

What I am saying is the following: This sample shows how sick people have got - ok in every society no matter how down or how prosperious a society is there is always a smaller or larger percentage of crooks who have no moral integrity.BUT in our society the percentage of Crooks (starting at the top in the Dail and going down to the crafty Gurrier in Co. Cork) has outnumbered the decent people of Ireland.

Did you offer to pay the vet bill for any injury you caused his dog?

You effectively agreed to the transaction when you paid for the rim, he took it back in good faith tbh, it was your mistake for not checking it at the time before you paid.

What loss did he suffer? He got out of bed with an Opel wheel. He went o bed with an Opel wheel and OPs fiver. He's a chancer. It's the nature of that business. What if it was an air flow meter and after buying it, the OP realized it was a slightly different one and had to return it?

I work in a family business and as part of our customer service, we stock spares. Sometimes you root around for half an hour for a single handle. It's annoying but it had to be done and again, you take the good with the bad because you can't win them all.

I wouldn't consider it normal to be honest. If you had gone back a few days, or weeks, later then fair enough, a handling/re-stocking charge would be understandable. But since we're talking a matter of minutes it seems a bit unreasonable.

But the time to question it and kick up a fuss was there and then when you were standing in front of him.

You confirmed that the deal was satisfactory.

    You then changed your mind.

He gave you most of your money back.

Well done him IMO. Deal was done and he had no obligation to change it as it wasn't faulty and you were happy at the time.

Had it got a decent tyre on it or just a steel rim?

You were lucky to get cash back and not a credit note.
