    That's the US Passat.

    Aww... Looks very similar!

    All they share is some switch gear and engines. Both use totally different platforms, the US Passat is new from the ground up and bigger, us European mugs just get a facelifted version of the same car on sale for the past 6 years.

    I was wondering recently how old that yoke was. 6 years is a long time ago.

    Would I be right in saying that they didn't sell the last model passat in the us. Only the passat cc?

    The Passat B6 was sold in the US. 2.0 TFSI only (very prone to carbon build up in the US), no V6 surprisingly!

    The new car for the US is based on the same chassis as the B6/B7 here, but they are able to price it much cheaper than before in the US becasue it's now built there!

    Unlike the US Jetta, which has gone old fashioned torsion beam rear suspension rather than the expensive multi-link used in Europe, the US Passat keeps the more sophisticated multi link setup.

    They also use less sophisticated engines, such as the old tech 2.5 20 valve lump. It has five cylinders though, which more than makes up for a lack of technological sophistication :)! I see this as no bad thing though, because I prefer larger displacement less sophisticated engines over the complicated and much more likely to go expensively wrong low capacity engines sold here:)!

    I think it's a much better looking car than our Passat.

    The new US/China Passat uses the new NMS platform which has nothing in common with the B6/B7 platform. The NMS platform is bigger. This is why the US/China got a new Passat from the ground up.

    Figured this would have something to do with the Chinese market.

    Currently they have the mogotan (05-10 passat) and the passat lingyu (mk1 superb which is essentially a 1997 passat) this would probably replace the passat Lingyu, although they sold the santana 3000 (80s passat) until recently.

    I don't know... spec for spec, prices are pretty much on a par with the S60.

    I can't imagine what your sex life is like if you get excited about a Passat tbh.

    Could you tell me how can every single car Volvo have produced be boring? I mean, when I think of 'Passat' I think of these types of people:

    GGITrip.JPG

    As a VAG fan, you are hardly in any position to comment. I, however, am not as ignorant to think the likes of a Passat is typical of every car VW produces and fully acknowledge that they have made cars like the Golf GTi, VR6 and R32.

    Now, while we're on the subject, tell me exactly how this is 'boring': http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volvo/V70/V70R-230/201105201108673/advert?channel=CARS

    God sake Volvos arent that exciting. I thought you were gone anyway when I see you posting in the prison forum...;)

    You have to factor in the hot birds driving xc90s into this argument.

    To be fair, saab and volvo drivers tend to have nice looking wives.
    Blonde intelligent types with emo glasses and fitted woolen jumpers, you know the type.

    Volvo = architect
    VW = farmer/civil servant.

    Haha, yeah. VW drivers are usually married to their sisters/cousins.

    They probably will after the positive reception to it on Top Gear last Sunday.

    I reckon it could be something good for Volvo if it goes into production, sort of like the T-5/R's were in the 90's.

    Anyway, lets get back onto the interesting and desirable car that is the Passat. Leave Volvo for another thread.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,056 ✭✭✭Tragedy

    Even if you dislike the new S60, it's a bit ignorant to call all Volvo's boring.
    850 T-5/r, s60/v70 T5/R, S40 T4, S80 T6, S80 V8.
    If you want a quick understated comfortable and reliable car(excepting maybe the S60r), Volvo's (and saab 9-5 Aeros) have been fantastic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,593 ✭✭✭tossy

    When did i call volvos boring? i was just poking a little fun at the fan boy who seen fit to wonder into thread about a car he has no interest in and post negative comments.

    As a VW fan boy and Ireland's Own subscription holder VW don't have a clue about making Vee sixes or GT eyes give me a lovely 1.9TDI anyday better than any ovlov ever made!
