New clutch is making a slight screeching noise when moving off

It doesnt happen all the time only maybe once every 5 or 6 times, and moreso moving off on a slight incline. The screech happens just when the clutch has been released fully or just slightly before it (never when it is at the "bite").

Is this a sign that it hasnt been fitted correctly or does it just need a bit of time to "bed in"?

Clutches as a rule don't screech.

Could be the release bearing on the way out. Was that replaced when the clutch was done?

Not that I know of so probably not.. would this be a reason?

The slight screach happens just as the clutch leaves the "bite" and never before or while the bite is being held or even when in neutral with the clutch going in or out.

My Escort does the exact same thing. I often wondered what it was.

has the clutch ever been changed or is it still the original?

I have the same issue on my Mondeo. Left it back into the dealer and they think it is a "polished" surface on the clutch disc. Used to happen on on the older Escorts. My mondeo has a Sachs clutch kit as OE, never heard this issue before. Spoke to the guys in LUK (rival clutch manufacture) and they never heard this before. Must be just a Sachs thing.

Had this in my focus before. I was after getting a new clutch and it screeched randomly when taking off. About 2 months later the clutch exploded into a lot of pieces. New clutch and problem was still there. More expensive one this time. Made no difference.

Thanks, so whats the options on getting it fixed? Would it be as simple as adding some lubricant?

I was told the clutch wasn't compatible with the stock internals and they never bedded together properly.

To be honest I just left it with the screeching noise and it kind of went itself over time. Got rid of the car now though so couldn't answer anymore about what it's like now.

I'm guessing that the garage didnt use the specific clutch for a renault clio but instead a generic part which doesnt fit as well. Would this be right?

Could have just been an after market one instead of OEM. Think mine was because of a worn flywheel against the new clutch.

Are they dear to replace (in relation to replacing the clutch)? I'm also guessing they would have spotted that when changing the clutch had they been doing their job?

No idea. I haven't done it. But since it's not a dual mass flywheel(I'm guessing) it shouldn't be too bad.

Best place to ask about it would be where you got it done. Have you gone back to them about the screech?

I've had this before in a car with the Original Clutch. I eventually figured out that it was the bonnet vibrating in the catch. That took a bit of figuring out (and a brave man to stand in front of the car pressing down on the bonnet while holding the car on a hill with the clutch)

Had it changed about 2 years ago, and it's been acting up ever since.

Is it likely to be caused by the thrust nearing not beign replaced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

    Some possible causes:

Scored flywheel (old clutch made a mess of it?)
    Contaminated flywheel
Release bearing shot (normally makes a racket when clutch pedal is up though)
Different friction surface on the new clutch that isnt working well

    Some more possible causes:

Bits of starter or flywheel falling on the friction parts of the clutch.
    Faulty clutch from manufacturing.
