Mayonaisse on oil filler cap.

I was checking the levels yesterday and noticed some thickish brown mayonaisse in the inside of the oil filler cap. There's none around the rocker cover or anywhere on the dipstick. (Oil seems fine, was changed around 5K ago.)

    Car is 1.8 Alfa.

I checked the expansion tank and no sign of any mayo there either. Coolant level is fine as well, no loss anywhere.
I did a serious amount of short hops over Christmas / January period & have only had it out on the Motorway once since.
Thermostat is failing open as well, only gets to high 60s as well, needs replacing.

    So what I'm wondering is

    - Is the cold running and short hops the most likely cause of the mayonaisse rather then some head gasket related problem?
    - If so, if I give it a could run on the motor, should the condesation and mayonaisse dissappear or will it remain even if there's no head gasket probs?
    - Should I drain and replace oil as well?

Replace the thermostat. wipe the mayo off the cap and bring it for a good spin and just check it a week later for the mayo.

If the coolant is not going down and there is no oil in it then it's not the head gasket. If it's running a bit cool and your going on a lot of short trips it's just condensation.

The twin spark rarely does head gaskets too.
