    Hi all,

    Advice needed

    01 Mondeo
    166K Miles on clock
2 ltr Zetec diesel, drives perfect

Failed NCT on breaklines, 2 front tyres, brake pedal pad worn, smoke test.

Brake lines, high corrosion , ur talking min €400 to fix, drop the fuel tank etc. .. . (the lad I had looking at it also said the car is very rusty underneath and said he would have thought the NCT would have failed it on that alone.

Tyres, don’t mind that 90 each,

    Pedal again, don’t mind, ,

The problem I have is that I could fix all of the above and still fail the smoke test, the max for the smoke test is 3, mine read 9.999000, , highend I was told

Theres no black smoke or anything, .. they just said, its very smoky . ..

Im trying an stp flush right now, and then 2 diesel 1 petrol mix. .. . .

Im not a mechanic, but a think pulling it from 9.9 to 3 is a big ask without looking at the cat, , , now that’s not an option, I don’t know how much exactly to fix, but it’s a lot id say. .

    Question,

Would u risk fixing it spending 500-700, and hoping to pass the emissions test. ..

Or, chucking it all in and go for a 08-09. . .

Fix the emissions first if you decide on trying to save car.

Can you provide the numbers from the NCT sheet?

    Sure,

    Smoke 9.990/M
    Limit 3.00/m

Do NOT put a 2:1 diesel petrol mix in the car, 2 litres of petrol in a full tank is overkill.

+1 way too much, how hot was the engine ? engine temperature makes a huge difference to a smoke test, air filter condition , again make sure its clean , oil level , for some reason in Ireland people don't understand the meaning of the word maximum the amount of cars I see regularly overfilled never ceases to amaze me the excess oil has to go somewhere and that's usually into your intake and will not help your case for a smoke test. Before going to the test give the car a good drive get the revs up and make sure its fully hot. Constant short running at low revs sut's up a diesel the best way to clear it is a good drive. I would try that before spending big money

My 00 also failed on emissions - at the high idle and CO2 output. It's going in again on Sunday and my plan was to lash in dipethane, drive it like billio between now and then and replace the air* filter Saturday night.

I know the bottle recommends a certain dosage but should I just put the whole bottle in? I've heard of people doing this. And with how much petrol? Say a bottle to e20 of petrol?

Also should I drive it hard until the tank is running low and then refill for the test or what? Will make sure the engine is red beforehand anyway. The guy I bought the dipethane from didn't seem too sure of the answer to any of these questions!

    Cheers for your help.

*actually think that may be fuel filter??

OP, you can try Halfords Diesel Magic and then drive it like you stole it for 10-15 mins?
    http://reviews.halfords.com/4028/264671/reviews.htm

Check local garage for emission testing after trying that, usually 20-25 or so.
But as you say, going from 9.99 to below 3 is a big ask.

I wouldn't. Without NCT, the car is pretty much end of life, why spend the guts of a grand on it to make it pass - maybe? It's just too risky when you can buy a similar car with a valid NCT for about a grand.

Test results on high idle were:
    Lambda 0.99 (between 0.97 and 1.03 fail)
    CO 0.56 vol% (above 0.305 fail)
    HC 235ppm (above 200ppm fail)

I'm getting rid of the car in July so I just need it to scrape through the NCT one last time and then it won't owe me anything...

If the HC is very high and the CO is close, you probably have an ignition/compression related problem. If the CO is very high and the HC is close, than you may only have a timing/mixture problem.
