Had a set of twins the other night was right happy, thing is , the cow has feck all milk to feed one never mind two. I`m in the process of buying a dairy cow with a high cell count to rear the calf. I`m also going to get another calf for her as that cow has more milk in her than all mine combined!!

Is there anything wrong with the milk for calf from high cell count cow
Whats the value of the cow, I offered him €450 euro but he wast n`t too keen, He`s an obliging type of man so he`ll sell me the cow but I don't want to take advantage, what would be fair ?

I cant see a problem unless the mastitis was E. Coli. I feed my bull calves the high cell count milk from the milkers and havent seen any problem with it . That i can see anyway

Nothing wrong with a high Scc cow, price depends on the size of the cow, i usually get €1/kg for cows straight out of the parlour, i sold 12 yesterday at average of €750 3 different guys mad to buy them, there average weight was 598kgs, in good condition but need more feeding.

Gave Him €700 for the cow and two Friesian bull calf's a week old.
I put all three calf's sucking the cow, to me the cow seems perfect, the milk looks OK.
Don't know if the Friesian calf's will ever come to much though

you got a good deal high scc cows making round the 700 mark and the calves round 300 for the two

really depeds on the 2 calves , 300 would be a bit generous imo

I was valuing the calf`s around €110 each, there only a week old plus theres a lot of white on them.
He (the farmer) seemed happy enough, he wanted me to take another, he reckoned the cow could rear 4 calf's easily!!
I never heard the likes before!!

I'd agree with funny man 1euro/kg. Give her a selenium injection/bolus if you want to get the cc down, but with 3 calves on her she won't get mastitis. Hope she takes to them all.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Never heard of the selenium injection/bolus for scc, have you had success with it. i have a couple of young cows that are high and no sign of mastitis do you think it would help bring them down.

considering what cull cows are making at the moment , thats a poor offer unless the animal is in poor order or quite old or quite small

Selenium and vitamin E are important in maintaining udder health

Cow is 9 years Old, She looks thin compared to the suckler cows but shes healthy other than the high cell count milk
The farmer reckons shes due to come bulling next week so I`m going to let her and the Landlord (The Bull) out into a dry paddock as soon as she takes with the calfs

I definitely got a good deal but I`ll do a good turn for him again.
(or 2 turns, he's the lad I got the Frozen Beastings from)

This sounds more like witchcraft than science.

Try it if you like, maybe shake a bit of parsley on her too

Instead of making silly condescending comments why don’t you read the link I put up or google selenium + scc

Would it not be customary to sprinkle parsley on the cow AFTER she was dead:)

    I did read it, Jeff.

    Did you?

A marginal impact on SCC in first lactation heifers is hardly evidence that Se supplementation would be much use in chronically mastitic high scc cows.

I may have been condescending, but you were extrapolating.

I am sticking with the parsley.

Ya have done it, works best when putting them dry as it gives the udder a chance to heal, and as already mentioned Se helps with the vit E. Deposel I think was the name of the injection.
