    Hi,

Can someone please help me? I wish to apply for the NY bar exams (to sit the exam in July). I have submitted my transcripts from UCC. I received an email telling me that I need to provide 'proof of fulfillment of the educational requirements for admission to the practice of law in the foreign country' (ie Ireland). I have a Law and French degree from UCC but have not taken the King's Inn's or Blackhall exams. The rules say that 'if you are not admitted to practice law in a foreign country, submit proof of the educational requirements for admission to practice law in your country and proof that you have fulfilled these requirements.'.

How can I demonstrate this? I emailed the Law Society but I received no response. Any help would be appreciated!!

    Hey Montreal,
So you decided to attempt the New York Bar! I'm actually taking it in 10 days! Mega stress  Anyway having recently just applied I can help you with whatever questions about it! First off, don't worry about doing it straight away as you have loads of time left to apply for it! Secondly it's actually relatively easy and the stuff you have to get and send over is also easy to obtain. In brief what you need is the transcripts from your college of each year that you were in UCC, stamped with the college seal etc. Just to prove that they are originals. You need a handwriting sample on a specific form which you just copy the phrase that it has on it. The form has to be filled out in the presence of a certain person, like a solicitor, a Garda or what I used and was fine was the head administrator of my Law school. So basically I just printed out the form, and copied the paragraph in front of the head admin person of the law school. Then they have to sign it to prove that you did it in front of them etc. This is the form http://www.nybarexam.org/Docs/HandwritingSampleForm.pdf (Dont worry about the BOLE id, you get that when you make an account with the actual Bar people thingy (great legal terms there eh :D )You also need a letter from your law school confirming that you attended and met all the requirements to pass your degree. You actually don't need anything from the Law Society so I wouldn't even waste your time emailing them. The new york bar website has some handbooks and things located on its homepage near the bottom on http://www.nybarexam.org/ Also I'm sure you've seen http://www.nybarexam.org/Rules/Rules.htm#520.6 basically just a more technical wording of what you need.

I know it's not the greatest explanation of what you need and everything and it's just off the top of my head because have a lot of study going on for the exam and im pretty busy. But when it's done, Feb 23, feel free to PM me to ask any more questions about it regarding applying or the actual bar and study and ill try and help you out as much as i can. Until then, all the best!

My transcript from Trinity had a note indicating that the degree was suitable for admission to the King's Inns which was the body responsible for regulating membership of the Bar of Ireland.

I further printed up the schedule of approved degrees from the King's Inns website and highlighted my degree.

    That seemed adequate for them.

    Thanks for the replies!

I contacted UCC about them sending a letter to say that the degree was suitable, and they just fobbed me off. The Law Society sent me through a letter to say that the degree made me eligible for the Law Society exams so I am going to post that off and hopefully it will do the trick. The NY people already have my transcripts so they obviously weren't enough for them. Here's hoping!!

Absolute best of luck with the exams Mickalis, thanks for your help!!
