Laptop hard drive

My brother in law gave me his laptop to look at as it wasn't booting. It's a Dell inspiron 1545. I managed to get it to boot but it ran very slowly and choppy. I tried to do a format and reinstall windows but I couldn't get it to format past 20%. I'm thinking the hard drive is failing. Anyone know what kind of hard drive to replace it with? Is it a simple task? I can put together a desktop but i don't have much experience with laptops.

If its anything like an Inspiron 1510 its very easy, 2 screws secure the caddy into the side of the laptop, 2 more secure the disk to the caddy. 2.5" SATA disk on the 1510. Wiki has pictures of SATA connections, to check.

see above, dont lose the screws, make sure the drive is the same size, height, as the old one.And the screw holes are in the same place, the screws need to put in precisely in order to line the new drive up perfectly in the caddy, in engage ,with the mainboard sata interface.the hd needs to be exactly the same place in the caddy ,as the old drive in order to work ok.Just take your time.
