    Hi I have a 03 130bhp Sport Passat.

one day it would not let me select gears so i gave it to the mechanic. He said na its fine no problems bit of rasping but thats all. So I drove again for a few months and then same again, only this time if i started the car in neutral i could not select a gear but if i started it in first i could select all no probs inc reverse.

My question is this, My mechanic says its a new gearbox fly wheel and clutch £1,000 in parts alone easy, and my car is only worth £2,500 at best. I have a new job with a new compnay car commingin 4 months, would his suggestion of adding heavier oil to the gear box work as a filler till i get my new car or should I bite the expensive bullet?

Ps i have tried and 6 speed gear boxes are like gold dust!

    All replies would be greatful.

    Thanks

I wouldn't go with the heavier oil thats only going to make it more cantankerous to get gears to be honest.

you need a car for 4 months - trade your car as is, there is always someone dumb enough to take a vw somewhere (no insult to you btw!!). Passats hold their value, and you will get someone to take your car as is and give you a car worth about a grand (or less).
Unless you go to the uk for a box and splash out getting the passat right. I really wouldn't bother.
