Ive asked the same question over in the politics forum-- Im not having much joy- I know I shouldnt double post- but I thought I may get an answer here.

Given the difficulty in actually getting a job in schools at the minute (and for the last 10ish years) I`m interested to know which of our current or prospective politicians are hold or have held teaching positions.

Id like to be well prepared for those that call to the door.

    Any ideas?

Enda Kenny held the record for holding a permanent teaching post open for the longest period of time. I think it was in the region of thirty years or so. He only resigned it when there was a public furor over the practice there a couple years ago.

Mary Hanafin held her permanent post until her second re-elect (8 years) and then resigned it afaik.

There are a number of other politicians but I am not 100% of them and so am wary of posting wrong information.

In the 30th Dail, those who are/were teachers was as follows:

    Fianna Fail: 14
    Fine Gael: 11
    Labour: 5
    Green Party: 4
    Independents: 2

Try here for a better breakdown.

    Hope this helps.

Would be interesting if anyone had the statistics of the original professions of our full-time politicians?

    Thanks Delphi91, great info!
It may also help explain why land access (as is normal in other European countries) is such an intractable problem for walkers in Ireland!! not wishing to offend anyone, of course!! But Roll On 'Change'!
    Thanks again, G
