Audi A4 1.8T, low coolant, mayo under filler cap

    Hi,

Have a 2006 A4 1.8T. When I turned it on this evening the low coolant warning light came on. There is just under an inch of coolant in the reservoir. There is mayo under the filler cap. There is no mayo under the oil filler cap. The water pump was changed about 4KM ago.

Do I have a problem or should just I fill it up and keep an eye on it?

    Cheers,
    Millbay.

Well there is no question that you have to fill it up if you plan on continuing to drive it. IMO you need to get the colling system pressure tested to make sure there is no leaks from the water pump or anywhere else. If its using coolant after having the pump replaced then the first port of call is the garage who replaced the pump.

Where is the mayo? Was the coolant renewed when the water pump was fitted?

It's under the coolant filler cap, there wasn't a lot. I don't know if the coolant was renewed when the pump was fitted.

    Head gasket is kaput.

The coolant is slowly seeping out from what looks like a nut, or bleed screw on a pipe running across the top of the engine into the radiator. I'll try to tighten it. Do these screws have seals that need replacing?

    Thanks

Looking closer at it this evening I see the head of the bleed screw has been snapped off (possibly over tightened when the water pump was done??) which is were the small amounts of coolant are seeping out. It looks the same are this:

The coolant is definitely not red/orange/pink so the wrong coolant was used.

I guess I need to get the system drained, get the bleed screw replaced and get it filled with the correct coolant.
