taoiseach and TDs salaries

    apologies if this has been asked before but i was just wondering who is responsible for rises in the salaries of the taoiseach and TDs?

    The government in their budget, so I guess the finance minister really, they give themselves the payrises.

    They are linked to the Principal Officer Scale in the Civil Service.

    Hmm. I could be totally off the bat with this but are political salaries not governed by the same benchmarking process that all ps waged were put through? This may not be the case but I'm sure I heard something about this back in the boom time days.

    They are bench marked, but I'm not sure against who.

    I remember Bertie claiming that the reason he should earn more than Tony Blair and Angela Merkal was because he had to buy his own tea.

    They also tried to sneak in a massive pay rise hidden behind the changes to the laws regarding learner drivers.
