Thread Silvercrest sewing Machine

Hi, I bought a Silvercrest Sewing Macine in Lidl before Christmas and just can't get the hang of bringing up the lower thread!
    The instructions say
    1. "Hold the upper thread with the left hand" Fine!:)
    2. "Turn the handwheel forwards until the needle is raised" Fine:)
    3. Pull on the upper thread to bring the lower thread up through the base plate". Not fine - nothing happens!
I have tried turning the handwheel both clockwise and anti-clockwise but it makes no difference.
I managed to bring it up once but just can't get it to work again. Is it possible that it is faulty?
    Thanks!!!

I don't have a lidl machine but it sounds like any similar machine. You have of course got a bobbin in the shuttle case (the bottom bobbin) and the thread is pulled through the slot in the shuttle case.

The most likely reason for your problem is that you are pulling on the upper thread. Don't hold it pulled tight, just keep hold of it so it is not pulled down into the shuttle case, pull the handwheel forward (put your hand on the top of the wheel and pull towards you) the needle has to go completely down to pick up the thread, then come up again, then you can gently pull on the thread to bring up the bottom thread. Catch the loop that comes up and pull out the end so you have two thread ends.

Thank you Looksee, I'm sorted! I went back to try again, using your instructions, and discovered that I hadn't pushed in the bobbin case in far enough - it snaps shut when you do and off you go! So thanks for your reply, I was ready to bring it back to Lidl, who were kindly going to refund me, but you gave me the impetus to have a final try. So happy sewing!

Those instructions can be so confusing!
I recently found a video online, made by either Lidl or Aldi, to show off how easy their sewing machine is to use.
The video had been made in German, with an English voice over, but that wasn't the problem..... the person making the video obviously knew nothing about sewing machines, so even when the 'story' was about how to use something at the 'front' (the user's side) of the machine, they insisted on filming from the other side, keeping the speaker centre stage.
So, how to load the bobbin, or how to select the stitch, were 'demonstrated' from the far side of the sewing machine :D.
