I found what appears to be a perfect 1 yr old passat in dublin on the carzone site with low mileage-almost suspiciously low!
I'm extremely wary of the horror stories re outstanding finance and write/offs or clocked odomoter or even worse stolen.
So I'm wondering what checks i can do before i even call the guy and what i'd need to do when i see it for real. should i get a mechanic to give it a run through.

    Hi there,

You can get an online check carried out - will tell you if the car has outstanding finance or been involved in any insurance claims (accident or theft). All you need to know is the registration number.

I would recommend having a thorough indepedant inspection (the AA and other companies do these) before purchase, this will point out any faults and also they usually gaurentee that if they miss something that they will pay for the repair. Of course you can take a mechanic mate but some sellers are reluctant for 'mates' or independant people to carry out a thorough check. Also, if the mate misses something, what comeback do you have?

Given the age of the car, ensure that the seller (if a garage) is prepared to give you a worthwhile warrently. Not 3 months with a maximum claim of 500 euro for the engine only - these warrenties are not worth the paper they are written on. Insist on a 12 month comprehensive warrenty.

I am assuming that the car in question being an '07 passat is not cheap so I think a couple of hundred Euros on these checks would be a good investment.

    Hope that helps.

    Mike

Go and look at it. Take down the chassis number and check the one on the log book against both the one in the window and on the engine.

The motorcheck etc will check this against reg
