How can I make sure I get a decent haircut?

I'm a man and I used to have long hair until I decided to get it cut last summer. Since then I've had five haircuts and I've only been happy with two of them. Of the other three haircuts, two of them were uneven and the other was way too short even though I actually showed the hairdresser a photograph of myself with the last haircut I was happy with. I told her to cut a tiny bit off and she totally cropped my hair.

It's time for a new haircut now and I'm dreading it. This might sound like a stupid question but is there any way I can tell if a hairdresser is good or not? Can I tell by talking to a hairdresser if she's going to listen to what I want and cut my hair evenly? Should I wait outside a hairdressers for an hour and look at the haircuts of everyone that comes out?

That's a bit disappointing, that she had a picture and couldn't get it right, seeing as the pic was of you. I don't know if stalking a salon is the right approach, could you try to go to one of the places you went before and get the same hairdresser (might have it on file). That's generally a good way to keep them consistent.

If you are based in Dublin I reccommend Reds Hair Group on Dawson St. They are pricey (Not sure what a gents cut would cost - womens is about 90e) but it is so well worth paying the extra few quid for a decent cut.

90 euro for a cut have you lost the plot.
    50 is expensive enough

For €50 I get a wash, razor cut, head massage with oils and a hot towel shave! It's the difference between a hairdresser and a barber. :)
OP, is there any chance you could post a pic of the style that you are trying to achieve?

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Good hairdressers are difficult to find here. They don't seem to get the correct training and the majority of them do not take into account the face shape, hairline and hair growth etc of the individual when attempting a style. Why would they? Most are ESN and either have no concept or lack the brain capacity to grasp the concept of what makes a good hair style. They are taught to churn out generic cuts without listening to individuals' needs or request. You said that you were happy twice. Why on earth didn't you go back to the same stylist then? Good stylists are difficult to find. I'm sure there are professionals in Dublin and dotted about the country, finding them is the problem. Best tip is probably to find out who has NOT attended a FAS course!

Oh and one last tip - If you want your hair styled correctly, don't come up to Donegal!

Alot of hairdressers do consultations with their customers, its a one on one thing where you can talk about what you want with your hair, bring in lots of pictures and even if it is baby language describe what you want from the cut. So when thats all sorted the hairdresser will know exactly what YOU want and will do their best to do it with your hair!

Maybe take a female friend in with you? My boyfriend has a habit of getting his head buzzed even though he wanted it cut. So I'd tell him cut it don't buzz it! I'd be completely honest with him when he got out of the chair too!

Firstly if I saw you outside stalking my salon Id ring the guards!

Secondly why didn't you go back to the salon where you were happy with your hair?

Its not that hard to get a mans haircut wrong!

    I'm not sure about that...

I went to the Drury barbers on Drury St last week and its one of the few times I've been truely happy.

I've tried Petermark, Valentinos and The Grooming rooms, and this place beat them all for E12. Its not the nicest salon but the two guys in there are total gents (and both pushing 60) and actually listen to what you're saying. Its a real old school barber shop

I was happy with the first haircut so went back a few weeks later. I got a different hairdresser and she made a total mess of it. I went to a different hairdresser for my next haircut and she cut it reasonably well. I went back there for my next haircut and again a different hairdresser cut it and left random long strands all over.

I've since gotten another haircut which isn't terrible but I'm still not totally happy with (one side is slightly shorter than the other).

I'm not looking for a complicated haircut. Just a short back and sides with enough on top to put a parting in (and to hide a double crown).

I live in Carlow by the way.
