Transferring vinyl to digital

    Hows it going lads.

I've a bunch of old vinyl that I'm looking to transfer to digital. Am looking for the best and cheapest way to do it.

At the moment I'm thinking I'll get a loan of a turntable and plug it directly into my Apogee Duet and record the audio in Logic. I'm assuming this can be done but I've never recorded anything through the duet. I use it only for plugging in the monitors at the moment.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this or better solutions.

    Thanks in advance.

    Al.

Not sure about the Apogee but the way I do it is just take a line out from my mixer and plug it into the line in / mic socket on the PC / laptop and record into something like Audacity or EXP Studio editor (both free).

Don't have a mixer. That's why I'm wondering can you plug a deck straight into the Apogee.

    Thanks anyway.

I'm pretty sure that unless the Apogee can act as an ampifier it won't be able to transfer the audio signal for the PC to record from. Do you have a stero system with phono inputs? You could then take a line from the headphone socket to the PC and record that way

I think the Apogee does have built in amplifiers. It has 2 mic inputs and 2 high impedence inputs. Presume these can be used.

Just took a quick look at the Duet and with the breakout cable you should have no bother connecting the turntable.

They can't be used. A record player output isn't a normal signal that just needs boosting, it needs to be equalised to RIAA standards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA_equalization). Basically in layman terms, you need to plug your record player into a phono preamp, and then plug the output from the phono preamp into whatever interface (eg that Apogee people suggested) you're going to use.

Cheers. I did see phono preamps mentioned somewhere when i was looking at this the other day. So I'll have to get a loan of a mixer aswell. Thanks for confirming.
