I believe some SBP staff took umbrage with Marian Finucane's gues Noirin Hegarty of the Sunday Tribune over the weekend. Seems Ms Hegarty mentioned the SBP's financial status.

Last I read the SBP lost 14% of its circulation last year. What is the story there?

All newspapers are losing both circulation and advertising due to the recession.

SBP did drop 14% (July - Dec 2009 vs July - Dec 2008).That drop over 12 months was fairly severe and I'd estimate that it's akin to about €525k off its topline.

That's a rough estimate just to focus on the financial impact of a circulation drop of that size, if you say that they are down 8000 copies year on year - it doesn't seem as bad or indeed so the real impact.

Ironically, the only paper to see a greater decline than the SBP in the same period was the Sunday Tribune.

Its not the biggest secret in the world then that the SBP are (I think I read last year) just washing their face but I don't know the rational of dragging that up in the interview last Saturday.

The SBP are owned by Crosbie who made a big loss in 2009 and their 2010 figures should be available soon - so the true extent of the picture will be a little more apparent.

Also the ABC's for Ireland are out late next week showing the final figures for the Tribune and Sunday Star and also the current state of the other media that don't bother or wont publish a monthly circulation figure.

I can only guess that she brought up the figure to point out how tough it is out there for Irish papers. It's not good that we've lost one Irish Sunday newspaper and that the SBP could be circling the drain.

Good comments. I read in the Irish Times the major cause of a loss of revenue was loss of "property" advertising. I don't recall that being a huge chunk of the SBP, maybe they mean commercial property ads? I would have thought loss of the old "compuders in business" ads (yawn) was as much a factor.

Haven't they laid off people already?

There's pretty good coverage of their imminent demise in the current edition of The Phoenix.

Will the Daily Fail try to pass themselves off as that paper as well?
