My younger sister bought her first car a couple of weeks ago. It had no nct at the time, but the local 'mechanic' she bought it from ensured her he would make sure it would sail through the test. So at the test centre, last week it turned out to be a heap. They actually shoved a bar up through the bottom of the car, it was so rusted. The car in question is a ford ka btw. Anyway, she paid e400 for the stupid thing, and despite the lowlife telling her he would give her a full refund, he instead decided to cut her a cheque for e350 today. Why? 'Because you got a bit of driving out of it' was his excuse,(which she didnt at all). He makes my blood boil, a real piece of ****, ****ing excuse of a human being, cant wait to see him in the pub this weekend:D
Anyway, surely he cant be able to do something like this? can he?

its not the e50 by the way. its the fact an asshole like this loser THINKS he can get away with doing stuff like this.

Well when there are less than intelligent people willing to buy cars without an NCT and without inspecting it why wouldn't he do it?

She was lucky to get anything back tbh.

To be honest it a 400 quid car !!, she got off lightly imo most people would get nothing back after paying so little for a car
She got 350 quid back, i would'nt be complaining too much

Sorry to hear of your bother - best thread title i've seen though!! - It's a headline grabber that you want to read!

If you went to court with that you would get no where... big mistake and lesson well learnt I would say.

Actually i think the op is dead right! Why should he be allowed get away with it? The fact he is local and is gonna sh1t on his own door step is one thing but he's a mechanic..... this is the very reason there are so many posts on here about "is my mechanic rippin me off?" or why there is always the hint that joe public does not trust people in motor trade!
What was wrong with him being honest and sayin look it's gonna need x, y and z done to it. Whatever about buyer beware to me that does not apply to a local mechanic. Have a bit of fookin pride in your industry!

Agreed BUT the Op should have a bit of common sense here "I'm buying a car for 400 quid without a test" surely you would get a 2nd opinion before purchasing regardless of who the seller is ??

A €400 car with no NCT ? Is she mad ? sounds like a death trap to start with, sure you would hardly get a good bicycle for that..

being honest if someone told me it'd sail through the NCT i'd say to them, put it through yourself and if it passes then i'll take it

Same with garages offering NCT gaurantees... Ridiculous! If you can gaurantee it, just put it through yourselves! Why can't they? No good reason why not

If yer man is a local, word will get round and hopefully he'll be on the scratcher soon...

good result to be fair, she got away losing only €50.
Did she just go buy this by her self? She was foolish and is lucky to be getting cash back. It is pretty silly of him to stop €50 off her though given that she is local etc.
Im surprised that he did not weld it underneath and get it through the test for her and then leave her stuck with a car she would never have any faith in.

it doesnt matter if it is 400 euro, 4000 euro or even 40,000 euro...

this is what is wrong with parts of the motor industry ....
people like this mechanic who you are supposed to be able to rely on, ends up screwing you.... no wonder the motor trade has a bad name...

and yes it is very easy for many people here to say.. its a 400 euro car ... what you expect.. or whay didnt u get a second opinion...
a lot of people dont know more than one mechanic... or a lot about buying cars.... so cut the OP sister a break

scumbag mechanic should be put out of business....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,273 ✭✭✭twowheelsonly

In fairness, I know, you know, we all know that for €400 she was setting herself up to get caught. But FFS she's obviously a young(ish) girl who was probably delighted and excited to be getting what she perceived to be a bargain. As stated it was her first car, so what's she supposed to know about cars? The scumbag mechanic saw her coming and was probably delighted with himself.

OP, you say that he's local and you'll probably see him in the pub. Don't get thick with him, just casually remark to him that your sister was very angry and upset and has spoken to Consumer Affairs who have recommended entering the Small Claims Court and notifying the Revenue.
If he laughs it off (and even if he doesn't!!) go ahead with it. He'll more than likely sell that car again, and again, and again, making a nice few bob each time. Worst case scenario somebody could buy and drive it without an inspection and end up killing or being killed.

Screw him to the wall - and make sure that your conversation with him is polite but audible to others.

    Pure Scum.

The cash is not the problem at all, e400 is nothing for a car, i know. Its just a bolox like him stinging my sister and thinking he's very funny doing so. This is what pisses me off. Anyway, yeah! she just decided to get a car herself. Shes studying to become a solicitor at the mo, so she just wanted the run around car to get to/from college. To make it better, I used to work for this guy myself about 8 or 9 years ago(weekend job thing), when i was a teen. He actually nicked my set of sockets, which cost 200 odd pounds at the time. Just a pity i didnt know she was going to that guy, or in fact buying a car at all.

    Ridiculous thread is ridiculous

€400 is nothing, and apart from the rust it sounds like its driving fine... what's his name? wouldn't mind a cheap run around :D

If you wanted to buy a motorbike and you knew nothing about them would you not (a) bring someone with you that knows about bikes (b) not think well its only 400 quid there must be something wrong with it?? (c) think to yourself "why did the mechanic not put it through the NCT himself??.
I'm not being cruel and do feel sorry for the Op's sister but common sense should prevail here too

It failed on a rake of stuff besides rust, the brakes were pretty bad, and two front wishbones were gone, etc. etc. etc. good thing she didnt drive it, very lucky. Wouldnt mind, but we could well afford to get her a decent car, had we known she wanted one. Ohh! The young ones these days, their getting very 'i can do it for myself'................ for shame!:D

Sorry but for that amount of money spent on a car with no nct the consumer rights wont get u anywhere. She will be told she paid well for what she was given ... junk. But yes you are totally right this is unacceptable... And from experience I once went through 6 cars in the space of 2 years... all cars with ncts all for under 1000 euro all from different mechanics.... I was short on money and this got me through I was happy they lasted as long as they did! Thats why I will only go through dealers now and will save up my pennies and know what I am buying in the future. Unfortunate begining but lesson learnt here I hope. 400 will not get you very far with a car.

Yep! i did actually. went up a week after i quit, and made a show of him in front of his customers. She also has two other brothers besides me and her boyfriend aint to happy with him. She was bit naive alright, admittedly. Still, though. he'd be so smug too, the nob.

400 will not get you very far with a car.

    I disagree :)
I bought a smelly ole Merc for €430, spent the following on it......

    1992 Merc E250D @ 226000 €430
    3 Tyres 226000 €210
    NCT and 2 x retest €106
    Wiper Blade €20
    Fuel filter €8
    Oil filter 226670 €13
    Semi Syn Oil 226670 €23
    OVP €93
    diesel pipe and j clips 227000 €15.89
litre of oil and anti freeze @ 228781 €13.25

The tyres on it were just about legal and barring the diesel pipe and jubilee clips nothing was urgently needed. So €400 ish can get you motoring if you aren't fussy :)

The OVP was a relay for the ABS and rev counter.

I see where you are coming from though.

Entertaining thread, like other folk, I reckon a fair bit of it is less than factual. If yourself, her older two brothers (which I would have thought you would have referred to as our older brothers or we have two ....) and her boyfriend will all be tackling him in the local he must be a beast of a man altogether.

'tis almost as if he robbed some penny sweets off her :pac:

    this - is - nuts!

the car sounds like an absolute shed!

    edited.

an early model ford ka, with no nct, terminal rust giving it the structural integrity of a wet paper bag, very poor brakes, dodgy suspension, and more you havn't mentioned!

how were none of these glaringly obvious things discovered on inspection/ test drive? even if you didnt notice them, why did you think the car was so cheap?

dont say 'shes a girl, she didnt know'. if shes a girl who doesnt know, she should have brought a man who does know.

400 quid, you got 350 back and learned a good lesson, that you could have got shafted a lot worse, be very very very thankful!

somewhere tonight a village is missing its idiot methinks.

Yeah. She was crying and all, because it was her first car, and she loved it, the same as we all loved our first car we got. The type of person he is too, Big Man would think this is very funny. This is what drives me mad!

Theres also the fact that she got 350 quid back.
Op why would you and your brothers even want to confront this man?? and in a Pub of all places?? I dont think the mechanic is being smug or has mistreated you in any way to be fair, he could easily have turned around and said "Go stuff yourself" and its sold as seen so i would be happy overall that your sister has'nt been landed with a shed and you got your money back.

look, i edited the above post, thats that. but i still maintain its a silly sitiuation. (you will also have to edit your post quote of me, otherwise people can still see ;) )

this is not the fault of the seller of the car, no way, no how. he was selling an item, your sister chose to buy it (albeit unawares), its not like he forced the car on her.

heres an interesting related story just to drive this right on home :).

during the summer, my girlfriend was looking for a car to learn to drive in, to make things handier getting to school again come september.

a mechanic buddy of mine was selling a 98 ford ka with no tax or test for 300 euro. a little rough around the edges, but what do you expect, it was grand for all the scratches and scuffs she was going to encounter. i gave it a good check over, was satisfied with the shape it was in for the money, gave him his asking price and drove it on home.

i gave it a good clean up because it was filthy, and changed the oil and plugs and sent it in for the n.c.t.

    it failed.

on a circlip missing from a track rod end, i bought a new track rod end for 15 quid (even though all i needed was a circlip) put it through the test again, and she has a great little runabout, and it has a cd player, which according to her is fantastic.

the moral of this story? just because its a cheap car doesnt mean its a lemon, you just have to have your wits about you.

and i actually didnt make that story up for the sake of arguement, just a funny coincidence.

wiger toods did you see the car when she bought it,i mean when she got it home. You said you worked for this chap so i assume you have a bit of knowledge of motors. How come you waited for it to fail an nct to bring it back and look for a refund?
How come you didnt tell your sister the car wasn't worth it as soon as you seen it? from what you say it is fairly obivious she got what you'd expect for E400 something your were going to have to put a few quid into to get right.
I say your sister didnt even hear a word of what the seller was telling her.She thought she was getting a bargain,it happens. father in-law rang me to say he had found a very cheap fiat stilo 03,no nct looked a very clean car, father in-law was going to purchase until i asked dealer why he hadn't put it through the nct.found out fairly quick over the phone why it was so cheap the air bag light was on on the dash,Down to the passenger seat sensor being faulty.Bought the car but got the parts in poland to keep it a cheap car and flew through the nct.
But you do get what you pay for, when heard your sister paid e400 for a car,do you honestly think it would have pasted an nct as is?

If she is young this could be a very cheap lesson, some people spend thousaands before they learn.

and she got 350 back, and now she knows to get advise the next time she is buying something she might not be so clued up on.

No he doesn't, please don't spout offensive rubbish like that on thread again.

@wiger toods please report such posts in future rather than replying to them.

    I disagree :)
I bought a smelly ole Merc for €430, spent the following on it......

    1992 Merc E250D @ 226000 €430
    3 Tyres 226000 €210
    NCT and 2 x retest €106
    Wiper Blade €20
    Fuel filter €8
    Oil filter 226670 €13
    Semi Syn Oil 226670 €23
    OVP €93
    diesel pipe and j clips 227000 €15.89
litre of oil and anti freeze @ 228781 €13.25

The tyres on it were just about legal and barring the diesel pipe and jubilee clips nothing was urgently needed. So €400 ish can get you motoring if you aren't fussy :)

The OVP was a relay for the ABS and rev counter.

I see where you are coming from though.

Was that the maroon E200 with tax that was in bangernomics a few weeks ago?

For €50, this was a cheap lesson in how not to buy a car.

In fairness a ford ka for €400 what can you expect they are well noted for rotten sills at the best of times its a common nct failure on them

Nope, was a 1992 E250 diesel, sold it November 2009 privately, she's due the NCT this coming summer so I may do some detective work to see does she sit the exam.

I like the way you didn't quote part of my post

It had 226000 miles on it and was running fine, the tyres were legal, the wiper, fuel filter and oil change along with the OVP were not urgently required and the thing would have done the 3000 miles I did in it without any of them being done. The diesel pipe was the only thing I HAD to replace as it was p1ssing diesel when that perished.
