Presentation for a Job Interview

    I have a job interview, for which I have to put together a 10 min presentation on why I am the right person for the job. I am a nervous wreck :eek: Honestly it has been ages since I have had to present, normally I am quite good at interviews but the idea of standing up and presenting is throwing me bigtime! Any tips or tricks I should know about??

    What a nightmare. 10 minutes? I'd have it all rattled off in about 30 seconds out of pure nerves.

    If you can maybe split it into different sections like education as one section and specific jobs as other sections. Then maybe you can make some bullet points around each section. Then instead of preparing a speech just know what points you want to make. Then maybe practise at home by talking about each section for a couple of minutes.

    It might be a good idea to go through the job spec and try to match what they want with stuff you've already done. So you can do a piece on solid experience you have that directly relates to what they want.

    Jesus though a 10 minute presentation seems excessive. Best of luck.

    Hey!

    I had to do this recently and it wasnt too bad. Use your job spec and their website. You will find a few key points on what is the most important things about the role. I broke mine down into Colleagues, Customers, Operations and Results, but yours will be differne.t

    Start with a quick intro that gives an overview of what you will bring to the job. Then go through each of your points and how you have done it before, eg your experiences. Then sum it up by going back to how you have shown that your past career is a strong match and you want the job.

    Also, my key key key point is to relax and enjoy it. dont be too prepared as you will come across as a robot. Make sure you only use a max of 6 slides, and just use them as a guide. Avoid death by bullet points! If you want to give handouts work away, but dont use your powerpoint as your handout.

    Practice talking slowly and carefully, and pausing between sentences.

    (Seriously) look up great speeches on Youtube,from great presidents and leaders. That will show you how to speak slowly and clearly, and have people hanging on your words.

    This can be a overwhelming process and planning is vital for you. What key examples to you wish to include? What key skills are most important to the hiring manager? Once identified focus on these and use te STAR technique - Situation, Task, Action, Result. However, as the presnetation is 10 minutes keep it brief, concise.

    If doing it on powerpoint, probably 5 slides would be sufficient. Maybe a good idea to include some management type images/graphics to add a visual suggestion of your ability to do job, supporting careers examples etc.

    Maybe have your first slide on yourself and some personal insights that reflect positively on you (captain of the football team, where your from, why you studied whatever, what you learned etc.). This shows that your human and down to earth and there may be an opportunity to show some humour etc. that lets people and you relax.

    Rehearse it as well because you may find it difficult getting use to the sound of your voice and the silence in the room can intimadate if not use to it.

    Failing to prepare to is preparing to fail........Plan plan plan.

    Thanks all, some good advice there. I feel like vomiting at the thought of it! Am going to put it together and rehearse this evening and then again tomorrow beforehand. I just need to remember not to speak too fast, I have a terrible habit of flying through things when I am nervous! Will be od'ing on the rescue remedy on my way there!!
    Any more advice will be very gratefully recieved!
