    HI there,
Occasionally In my 2001 Renault Clio the car won't start the first few times.. When this happens the immobiliser light stays on. I think it may be the key. If I shake the key it makes a noise like something is loose inside. Can you please advise me on what to do. I only bought the car 3 months ago. Should I buy a new key from Renault?? I am presuming this won't be cheap.. Or could a key cutting place do this??

I called Renault today who said a new key would cost €220 & it sounds like that's what I need... A key cutting guy in the city said he could cut me a key with the same chip for €45!! I might as well try it and see if it works.. Anyone have any experience with this??

Found www.autokey.ie to be quite good for replacement keys.

Main dealers charge an arm and a leg.

    Go with the €45 choice.

Before you get anything done with the key, have the area around the roof aerial checked for leaks as the key fob receiver is directly under the roof aerial and it common for the seal around the aerial to leak and cause the receiver to malfunction. Have you had trouble opening the car with the key button?

I had an immobilizer problem with my caddy van which kept it off the road since November all the mechanics i brought it to said it'll cost upwards from a grand but someone gave me this guy's number today and I reluctantly called him. Not expecting much he arrived a little late but in a little over an hour had it running and all for 120 quid. Didn't get his name but his number is Autolocks 0863245945

    Hi,
Nope none as I don't have any key buttons at all. It's just a plain ole key!
My car's the most basic model with no electric things. (Can't you tell I have zero clue about cars!!)

Was that not for the earlier Meganes / Clios / Scenics which has the infra-red plip remotes? The infra red pickup for the central locking and immobiliser was just in front of the mirror, and I've seen a few of them with water in them leaking in around the roof aerial!

A dodgy flywheel sensor is fairly common on Renaults and can produce intermittent starting difficulties similar to those of an immobiliser problem. However I can't recall what the immobiliser light does when this happens.
