Ps3 won't start

Hi. When my nephew tried to play his ps3 today all he could get was a yellow background, like some wave or something like that.
It sounds like the game is spinning inside the computer but nothing else happens.
We turned the power off for 10 minutes and when we turned it back on there's only black background now.
Anybody have any ideas what the problem is?

Try turning it on but hold the restart button for about 10 seconds, happen to me a few times

Has he cheanged the tv he was playing it on to another tv? If so he'll have to reset the settings as stated by Cots1.
When starting up the PS3 hold finger over the button until you hear a beep, then release finger off the button.

Thanks yeah we tried that when it had the yellow background but since then its been black.
I held it till I heard a beep

No he wasn't playin it on a different tv.
He played it yesterday then today after school it hasn't worked.
We tried that with the reset button but that didn't work?

Try turning it off and then unplugging it from the power source for 30 sec to a minute. Then try and power it on.

He left it powered off overnight and this morning turned it on keeping his finger on the button until he heard the beep.
He said it took a few minutes to reinstall or update or something like that but its working now.
