Greedy bastard landlords. Now watch the place sit idle and empty.

    Another loss.

Sin É is/was a great spot, it was my favorite while I was in college.

I can't believe landlords are still refusing to reduce rent.

Thats very bad news. I would have thought that Sin E was a pretty busy pub. Anytime I walked by it there was always loads of people outside.

What the hell is wrong with these landlords? Its not as if there is a q of potential tenants lined up.

Another quality boozer gone. Good staff, good atmosphere, good drink. Damn I'll miss that place.
Many a good time had there.

Despite it being a bit out of the way, it was always worth going to, a decent pub that played good music, and served decent beer. The landlords could do with a pint of cold reality themselves, if the people who ran Sin E couldn't make it viable as a business because of the rents, then I doubt that any other potential owner/manager will either.

:( Pity it was such a great pub! :(

One of the good ones. Decent music, beer and atmosphere there. Can't think there will be much better to fill its place, sure that part of the Quays is fairly dead as it is.

This is sad news, won't make it home before it's gone. Love that bar

One of the best pubs in Dublin, if not thee best. Terrible shame, but I'm sure they'll be back.

fingers crossed the landlord has a change of heart by 2016 when 14th Feb falls on a Sunday ;)

On a serious note, sad to see the place shut. Only been there a few times, but each time was a good time.

I won't be going into any detail here but while the sign might blame the landlord, the reality is completely different. The creditors' meeting is next week so watch this space...

    From thejournal.ie

...Sin E – has called a creditors’ meeting for next Tuesday, 15 February.

According to the Insolvency Journal, the company last filed accounts at the end of October 2009. A company is obliged to call a creditors’ meeting when it wants to go into liquidation.

What a pity, I'm actually a semi-regular in Sin É so this is very sad news :(

Btw will this effect Dice Bar at all as they have the same owners?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,674 ✭✭✭Faith+1

Another business bites the dust. How exactly does the landlord expect to rent the premises again if S/HE refuses to lower the rates???

The city centre might as well shut up shop if this madness continues.

Waterstones, Gruel, Sin é, HMV (Soon), Zavvi, Thomas Cook, RTV Rentals, Movie Magic, West's Jewellers, Chartbusters etc.. Just a small few business that have gone recently. What's next?

The sheer wanton greed of landlords is destroying the city and its businesses.

If this keeps up, the only businesses left that will be able to afford to keep paying the bubble era rents will be the multinational chain stores...and some of these may well pull out too.

    Very sad...:(

While I detest greedy landlords as much as anybody and also like Sin E, there is no actual evidence of rack-renting here. Maybe Sin E financial problems made them seek a reduction on an otherwise normal rent and this is brinkmanship?

I live in fear of The Dice Bar suffering a similar fate. :(

The Irish Times - Thursday, February 10, 2011

Party over as noted venue Sin É to shut over rent difficulties

    CONOR POPE, Consumer Affairs Correspondent

THAT’S IT for Sin É, one of Dublin’s most well-known and popular venues, which is to close its doors for the last time on Sunday night.

The owner, Ciarán Finnerty, told The Irish Times yesterday he could no longer afford to pay the rent on the Ormond Quay premises. He said while he was “heartbroken”, he was not prepared to trade recklessly and so had no choice but to put the business into voluntary liquidation.

A creditors’ meeting is to be held next Tuesday and he expressed the hope someone would step in by then and buy the business, which employs 18 people. “It seems hopeless, but we are still working flat out on the off-chance that we can save the name at least. I built the place up from the ground; there was nothing there before I opened it. I will be heartbroken if if goes but I will have to move on.”

News of Sin É’s difficulties emerged when Mr Finnerty posted a notice outside the pub this week, outlining its financial difficulties and expressing “hope for a brighter future”.

Sin É opened in 2003 and quickly became a hugely popular final destination for many Dublin pub-goers who appreciated its atmosphere, shabby-chic feel and laid-back staff. Billy Ó hAnluain was a DJ at the venue for more than six years and although he left last September, he has been asked to play some tunes on the final night.“There was always a great house party atmosphere there,” he said. “We’re giving it one last hurrah and we expect it will turn into a wild party.”

The Button Factory in Temple Bar has also announced it has gone into receivership.

Not the 1st to close down and Im sure it wont be the last. Between the landlords and councils they,ll screw a few more shops/pubs etc out of business out.

    Clarification in today's IT

An article was published in yesterday’s edition which stated incorrectly that the Button Factory in Temple Bar had gone into receivership.

In fact, as was reported in the edition of February 5th, Temple Lane Management Ltd, the company trading as the Button Factory, has been placed in examinership.

The Button Factory continues to trade and is determined to come out of examinership.

We would like to apologise for the error and any distress caused.
