It seems a bit expensive to me, you might want to ask if there's a crack in the housing or if it's just a gasket gone on one of the joints (if just a gasket then maybe 10-20 euro for the part and about 20-30 minutes work for a slow mechanic). Price of gaskets - http://cgi.ebay.ie/MITSUBISHI-PAJERO-COLT-4G93-EXHAUST-MANIFOLD-GASKET-/370249354627?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item563494cd83
price of some of the exhaust bits....

I'd advise you buy the part yourself....and I probably wouldn't return to the garage to have it fitted there.

(you'll need new gaskets either way, you'll probably be able to find them cheaper then above)

First of all, get a second quote from an exhaust centre.
Maybe it's something that can be welded?

Check on ebay. Maybe a local breakers has the same type car? You should be able to get a second hand one cheap, mind you never know if that will fail on something else.

I would really doubt any garage would suggest two parts of the exhaust system need replacing if it's just blowing from a gasket.

True, but they are asking for at least 3 times over the odds for the cost of the parts, I wouldn't trust them after that could be anything really.

Garage charge RRP for parts, RRP for the exhausts may well be €160 and €120. No way would RRP be €53.33 and €40 anyway.

They're looking for 280 for exhaust pipes, not including a cat or back box, if you can provide links showing that this is the RRP or a even a fair price for this then fair enough, if not then from what I've seen I'd say they are taking the piss...it's not really unheard of from Irish garages in general, I wouldn't hold so much faith in them.

Who said the backbox is not included?
Seems as you are asking me for links are you going to provide links for the €54 and €40?

    Backbox €150

Total rip off but that's RRP

Does the exhaust sound noisey, or are they recommending replacement based on a visual inspection?

Either way, a second opinion will do nor harm. From my own experiences though, parts for some Jap makes (especially Mitsubishi and Mazda) are not cheap, even for spurious.

If the holes are on the pipe rather than the actual boxes they may be easy to repair, I had a Prelude about 2 years ago and the exhaust started blowing from a pipe just after the centre box due to corrosion, a metal strap yoke from Halfords sorted it :) Wouldn't last forever of course.

I found these guys good on prices:

    http://www.autofastfit.ie/contact.php

If it's just the pipe joining the two boxes, you might be able to get somebody to weld a new piece of pipe over the break, like a sleeve. ( But later if a box goes, you probably will need both boxes.)

I'd ring around to a few scrap yards, you should be able to pick up a backbox at least for a resonable price, as rover was saying, it's hard to know if a weld would do with out seeing the problem, if you can afford it you're always better off replacing the part. If you feel confident enough it may be worth jacking up the car and having a look to see if there's much of a visable break in the exhaust, just be careful and use axel stands where appropriate. There are temporary fixes which can be done cheaply if you're strapped for cash using a bubblegum like material covered by a strap (most car shops would have a kit) again though, it's down to the amount of damage on the exhaust and it would only be a temporary measure.

Or for 62 euros delivered on ebay http://cgi.ebay.ie/Exhaust-Rear-Back-Box-MITSUBISHI-COLT-1-3-1-6-1992-2003-/120672575333?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c18a55f65

An exhaust from a scrapyard will be a waste of time and money imo. The carbon and other chemicals eat into the metal once an exhaust isn't in regular use. If it's been sitting for a few months in the scrapyard, I wouldn't even go to the trouble of removing it. You could get lucky and get a fresh one, but even then of course, it might be little better than the one you're taking out!

€200 fitted using OEM parts sound good, esp if the difference to the cheapest option is only €45.

Realistically it wouldn't, Souhans are well regarded to I imagine they wouldn't wrong you.
