Swelled Bullock's balls

A neighbour asked me to pop out and look at his bullock today and his balls are are swollen the size of a bucket.

He was squeezed once with a burdizzo and guy redone him weeks later and made a balls of it probably

It has swollen to the point that it has burst (Bottom front side of scrotum) and red puss/tissue coming out, its good that it is coming out otherwise i'd have opened the bottom of the scrotum to let it out. Would ye be in favour to cut it to let out the badness or leave it?

Note; The vet was called gave him a single shot and told him to wash it with salt water and he'd be fine that was 3 weeks ago and he charged him €150 for the pleasure

I suppose you were laughing when you wrote this piece and i'd safely say your probably the only one that did since it was posted, you gave it away when you said the vet charged €150.

I'm no expert, but I'd imagine a course of antibiotics would have been more like it. Time to get a new vet!
What happened, must have 'squeeze' across the central area.

Yeah he squeezed the life out of him the second time i thought he may even have got the urine cord but he can still urinate - horrible job on him though

New vet definitely required!! (Vet didnt do the original castration though)

Castration is a job that you cant be too careful at, i do a good few of them and thank god no problems but i take my time and leave it closed on for at least 10 seconds and if he strong or i unhappy with first cut i move down the cord a little and repeat

tie a string very high up around what is left, very tight,so it will fall off and inject for a good few days

I injected him yesterday and today and opened the bottom of the scrotum and he half the size there this evening i could get my hands in around him and massage out the last of it... so he much better i again washed it out thoroughly with warm water/salvon and coated it with iodine spray

    Hi,

9/10 months id say good strong ch bull calf.

I do our lads if we keeping them 2/3weeks before weaning and it doesnt knock them- no bully heads on them and they thrive coming out of the shed - no set backs

Apart from being cruel to use a burdizzo on animals over 6 months it is often a disaster like this case. Anyone doing it should have it done to themselves.

PS it's also illegal as far as I know

They should also get a shot for Tetanus, when using the brudizzo. Same injection that covers blackleg, as far as I know.

if possible get a rubber ring over it , or a cable tie ... yes the blackleg shot would be a good idea too

FFS I'd be trying to let out the infection , not lock it in

Bought one in last year that had a similar problem.
As soon as I noticed the swelling I called the vet.

Messy job - he made a substantial kind of angled incision and lots of muck came out.
Washed him out with soap and water but never gave him a shot of anything.
(Vet is semi retired in his eighties)
He said that important thing was to keep the wound open and advised if it seemed to be closing to wash it or even put a water hose on it.

Luckily it stayed fairly open and oozed for 10 days or so. He went down to normal size fairly quickly and was perfect.

On the burdizzo use I would say that even the most experienced or expert can get the odd one wrong.

I also think it illegal to use burdizzo on an animal over six months (without veterinary surgeon present) or is it just a stipulation of the suckler welfare scheme that i'm thinking of? Anyone?!

I asked someone who knows everything.

Apparently its illegal for anyone I think to castrate an animal over 6 months without an aneasthetic.

And apparently you can't use an aneasthetic with a burdizzo.
