Blisters

    Hi all,

    I'm looking for advice on treating and preventing blisters.
    Last few 10 mile runs i have done i have got blisters on the soles of my feet just behind my toes and blood blisters on tips of my toes. I can feel them coming on about 7-8 miles into the run but work thru it but do be walking on my heels for few days after.
    My runners and socks are tight and not loose or anything so what should i do to prevent them. Is it a good idea to smear some vaseline on my feet before heading off in future?

    Never managed to figure out anything specific to prevent them, but Compeed are your friend once you have them.

    Hi Comic Book guy, you really need to identify the root of the problem, and it's usually down to shoes and socks. Perhaps you should try some twin skin socks?
    but do be walking on my heels for few days after.
    I would avoid this if at all possible. Avoiding running/walking on blisters can lead to injury. Treat them if necessary (Compeed, sterilized needle, etc).

    Are your running shoes big enough? Possibly not.

    I suffered with them for years!
    I only had to look at a road map to get one!!!!
    Here are my few tips
    1. Methylated spirits: you can pick up a small bottle in your local Chemist €3.00 approx for 100mls (This will harden up the skin put it on once a day like aftershave) You will be better after a week.
    2. Cut your toe nails! or get proper fitting runners.
    3.Wear your socks inside out. (Why do they put the seams in the inside!)

    Hi Comic Book Guy,

    Can't help you with blisters on the soles of your feet, never really got them. But I definitely know your pain about the blood blisters on the tips of the toes. I used to get them all the time on the right foot more so than the left. I thought my shoes were too tight, in fact it turned out to be the opposite, my right foot is around half a size smaller, hence my toes were moving too much when I ran causing the blood blister.

    I'd suggest getting both feet accurately measured, and if this is the case, maybe consider wearing an extra sock....maybe. But the vaseline did help me, putting loads on before a run. It does tend to loose effect after 10miles+ though. There is a debate that Bodyglide might be better, but I won't comment there as I've only tried vaseline...I leave that to the more experienced runners in here...:)

    blood blisters on tips of my toes.

    I'm fairly sure this is a sign of your shoes being too small. I wear runners that are one full size larger than my street shoes and I haven't had any blister problems for years.

    Could really have done with a warning on that photo. I'd expect some chaffing could have been an issue more than blisters on the feet as well. :eek:

    Blisters occur due to friction and a build up of heat.
    From my experience its either badly fit shoes ie the toe box too narrow
    or the shoe is the wrong type.
    Blisters around the toes sounds like the shoe is too small in length or too narrow in the toe box.
    Twin skin socks will help but on the tops of the toes is the only area they usually don't help.
    Try bodyglide/vaseline on the feet before the run.
    Get your feet measured before and after your run,you will be suprised how much the foot expands due to blood flow.
    As a previous poster said compeed are great just to keep your training going until it heals.

    Physio Sport used to do an Anti Friction product which was kind of like vaseline in a squeezy tube. I still have an old tube of the stuff but I'm not sure if the brand exists anymore. I find it very useful for blister prevention and would imagine there are similar products out there in the market

    Thanks for all the feedback guys. Think i mite take a trip into a specialised running shop with my current runners and see what they think.
