Playing music for hire

I'm not sure if this is the right forum. I'm considering playing music for hire. I've played music for a number of years with an amateur band and I'm considering playing music part time on my own for hire. I've never done this before so I'm not sure how it will work out. I have a full time job so this will be weekend work or during holidays. I'm just wondering, how does this work money wise. Should I set up my own company and work through proper accounts or should I just do it cash in hand for a while to see how it goes? I can play right away but I will have to invest some money in some equipment before long so it might be best do this through my own company. Also, how do I advertise myself?

i'd recommend working away initially to see how it goes - if you;re bringing in the readies, then set up your own company. i dont see the advantages though of a company - a sole trader might be a better option. buying a couple of grands worth of gear once mightnt be worth the cost of a company.

You advertise yourself by playing good gigs. Most bands actively seek work, rather than venues coming looking for them, so you will have to be out there trying to find new places to play.

Are you talking about being a one man band with a PA a guitar and a backing track or a session musician (I,E) a hired instrument to help out bands when there own guy cant do the gig . It may help with the replies you get . Or are you talking about mabey doing DJ at pubs and parties.
