Just had this debate about some of the claims potential TD candidates put on their pamplets to gain local votes, like how they secured funding for local projects etc. Where do you go if they claim something that you can prove they had no involvement in? What law/bodies cover this?

Well I was looking more for an electoral commission but we don't seem to have one.

You're not seriously suggesting that people actually read these circulars - or even (perish the thought) that even if they do that they would actually believe anything in them?

Politicians have mastered the art of associating themselves with good news, typically by issuing press releases saying that 'Deputy Mary Murphy welcomes the announcement by the Minister for the Environment to allocate budget for a new fire engine for the fire station at Ballygobackwards', this type of publicity is designed to associate the TD with the good news even though he or she had nothing to do with the decision other than that she is in the same party as the minister who did.

A practice of local councillors up to a few years ago was to go through the council's list of planning approvals and in advance of the official letter they would send a personal letter to the applicant telling them that their planning application had been approved 'and if there's anything else you need please don't hesitate to contact me'. This was usually a surprise to the applicant who in most cases had not asked any politician to intercede in what was typically a run of the mill planing application.

Bottom Line: The people of this country are well used to politicians claiming credit for everything good that goes on in their communities.
