    Hi All,

I'd like to hear your opinions on the following foodstuffs. They would probably all be considered healthy foods but in relation to a moderate carb diet would they be conducive to weight loss? Would the likes of porridge be very calorie and carb dense?
I am interested to hear other views, opinions appreciated, thanks.

    Porridge
    Chickpeas
    Kidney Beans
    Oatcakes
Cremosa sugar free lollipops(!! ok perhaps not healthy!!)
Sugar free jelly (are sweeteners as evil as sugar itself)

    Hiya

Yes porridge is quite carb dense but a very filling brekkie
Chickpeas are great,, i love them and i add them to all soups and stews
Kidney beans are good as well although some of the more low carb posters on the boards might not agree
Oatcakes, good with a bit of hummus or peanut butter but are very addictive and the nairns ones come in ginger flavour too which are addictive.
For the cremasso and the sugar free jelly, they are really used in weight watcher type diets and its all down to opinion but i wouldnt be eating them anyway.

Now just to qualify that, i did a low gl low carb diet to lose weights and stick to it now so thats how I personally feel; about the above foods

My take on this would be that if you are going to be in some way restricting your calorie intake then you want as much nutritional bang for your buck as possible. Furthermore it is easier to calorie restrict if your food intake has a high satiety factor such as that provided by protein and fat.

Here is my take on the food that you wanted folks opinions of...
Porridge: Are you gluten sensitive? If so avoid. Also not going to pack as much of a nutritional punch as the like of eggs. I know that eggs keep me fuller for longer.
Chickpeas & Kidney Beans: Gotta make sure that you are preparing them properly. Also not going to pack as much of a nutritional punch as the like of eggs. Plus I believe that the only plant food which has all the essential amino acids present are potatoes...
Oatcakes: Not much help to you here as have never eaten them. I would ask yourself what kind of nutritional bang for your buck are you getting here
Cremosa sugar free lollipops(!! ok perhaps not healthy!!) & Sugar free jelly: Can only speak from personnel experience here but I have found it easier in the past to completely kick my sugar habit instead of torturing myself with fake food which IMO this stuff really is.

You ask are sweeteners as evil as sugar itself but I would say to you that those artifical sweeteners are not natural and that you are probably better off just trying to kick your sugar habit which is no mean feat.

Best of luck with the weight loss:)

If you can digest the beans and oats without any trouble - go ahead imo. Make sure you're preparing the beans right like already said (unless you're using canned which they will be already prepared), might be a good idea to soak the oats overnight if you have them first thing for brekkie. Soaking will help neutralize the phytic acid in the oats (something that, in simple terms, can bind some minerals like calcium and magnesium in the body thus preventing them from been absorbed)

I know a lot will disagree, but sugar free jelly is great for a sweet tooth to have. Filling too (because of water )

Never had or seen the cremosa stuff so cant comment and i am not even going to tip on sweetners as its a large bag of worms. I use myself xylitol to sweeten things like stuff in home baking.

Oatcakes can be a handy snack. easily eat a lot of them though and most rough oatcakes are around 45kcals a pop
