    Hi,

I know that you can send a parcel by registered post and that will provide you with a definite proof of postage.
But I am just wondering, is there any way that the receipt you recieve from an post at the counter when you post something, could be used as proof of postage?

It can be used as proof of postage, but paypal will require proof of DELIVERY. ie, if you send something paid for with paypal and the person doesnt receive it, they can open a paypal dispute.
If that happens you have to provide proof of DELIVERY, ie proof that the buyer signed for the item, so sending things registered post really is the only option.
A receipt for postage from An Post means jack to paypal UNLESS it has a tracking number on it.
In event of a dispute this is what paypal use to decide the outcome of a claim.

You didn't say whether you're selling something or returning something you bought. I'll assume selling.

The receipt is proof that you posted something alright, but it doesn't specify what it is or to who it was posted. If you're talking about posting something that you sold it won't cover you against claims. Your responsibility as a seller is to ensure that your buyer gets what they bought, not that you posted the item. So proof of delivery is what you need.

    I see.
Yes, this is selling I am talking about.

What if the receipt was accompanied with a line in the ad something like
"The seller does not accept responsibility for items that are lost in post"

    Or is that even legal?

That doesnt mean anything. Once the buyer has paid for an item their side of the deal ends, its up to you to garuantee receipt of goods, which can only be done via registered post.
A lot of sellers will only post with regitered service, and dont use any other method than that - however, it is slightly dearer.
If items are lost in the post the buyer can claim from YOU, the seller.
You can claim from An Post if you have the original receipt, and fill in the forms but the process is long and unreliable.
