Point of the elections?

It's just occured to me that as we weigh up the possibilities concerning our future government that there is an argument there that it doesn't even matter. I think the Irish mindset is so intrinsically negative that whoever takes up the hotseat will have no chance...

For example, despite having a forum set up to discuss the elections, when a healthy discussion is encouraged its torn down for apparently promoting some band

Are we so ignorant and negative that we can't look at the facts and figures that are putting a dark cloud over the nation without seeing the innocence in wanting to create a better future? Why must we always try to find someones alterior motive for doing so?

I firmly believe that not everyone has a "secret motive" for wanting to open a bit of discussion on what to do...Is it any wonder an estimated 1000 people/week are getting out of this country as fast as they can?

Your thoughts on this? Better be quick before its cynically taken down too...

there is an argument there that it doesn't even matter.

Is that the old "Shure they're all the same" arguement? Which is the last refuge of the die-hard genetically FF voter trying to do an impression of someone who is a free thinker?

Hahaha, takun, thanks for the reply, I think that maybe you've missed the point, my argument isn't that "they're all the same", its that "we're all the same", because they certainly are not all the same. With the way things are, Im wondering what the best way to go is, because I've a feeling the public will react the same no matter who is in charge...as for the personal attack, I couldn't be further from an FF man if I tried and my free thinking credentials are the same as anyone elses, I won't jump to conclusions about your preferences but what do you think about the point?

And Ahsuretisgrand, thanks for demonstrating and proving my point, if you've anything of interest or value to add don't hesitate, otherwise try and keep the immature thread spoiling away from the dicussion, cheers

I didn't mean it as a persona; attack, it was just a bit hard to know what you were getting at in your original post, and it wounded like you were saying it didn't matter who was elected. I really think it does.

    You mean in this sense?

No, I don't think we are all the same, nor do I think that the Irish mindset is intrinsically negative. I do think a lot of people are beaten down, scared and confused at the moment, and are occupied with keeping themselves and their families fed, housed and clothed and trying to make their futures as secure as they can any way they can.

But I also work daily with people who are starting businesses, or working long, long freelance hours where before they had, or thought they had, security. There are many people working hard to built something out of the wreckage and move on.

Both surviving when things are really tough (as they are for many people) and trying to get something new going takes a lot of time and energy. So maybe people are quiet, tired and frustrated. But I think it would be a mistake to confuse that with some sort of intrinsically negative mindset.

There were several points to my thread to be honest, but I'll stick with that one about it all being the same...

I appreciate what you're saying about people trying to dig there way out of the hole we're in, and its so great to see!

I'm currently working in a thriving bookmakers on dirt wages and experience poor management making selfish cuts on a daily basis in the name of this recession and I deal with hundreds of customers a day with the same selfish attitude, which is what got me thinking about this and I was finally urged to post this thread because of a link I had related to this being removed despite its relevance...

If we all vote for another right wing style government, we'll get more of the same, people being naturally suspicious and out for themselves, however, if we vote for some form of left coallition, for the first time in the state, the policies that such a government would introduce would cause more hardship on people and result in more negativity...

I find it hard to fully articulate what I'm tryin to say but I hope thats got the jist of it out, I could go on but I'm more interested in other peoples opinions about what way to go to try and breed a little positive attitude...

The problem with this up coming election seems to be that we have been told since the EU rip-off, sorry bailout that we have no options over the next 4 years regardless of who we vote for. This is going to lead to serious problems for us a country as we are basically told to shut up and grin by the 3 big parties, who all suffer from the same cute whorism (with FF some way in the lead I might add).

As a people we are having our rights stripped away from us in every conceivable way and this can only lead to unfettered negativity running right through society and it will eventually come to an extreme head if it is not knocked on the head.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"
