Clicking Jaw Treatments

    Hi All

my jaw has started to click (I was mugged and they gave me a mighty right uppercut) and I would like to do something about it before it escalates.

Can anyone recommend a particular treatment that has worked for them ? I understand the forum prohibits posting names of people who might help but if you know of anyone can you PM me ?

I'm suprised at how anxious this has made me: it's as much an emotional issue as much as anything else: from the little that I have read the chances of sorting it are slim, is that the case ?

Any help guidance would be great.

    Thanks

    Simon

where is Ireland I will PM you a contact. Often there is little that can be done and it usually goes away. Sometimes exercises can help and medications. Other times splints are made to help. Its not an exact science but some reassurance might be helpful.

I have this also, have it for about 6+ years. It wasn't that bad, an occasional click when I eat but now it's getting bad. People comment on it sometimes when I eat. I had braces for years and got teeth removed for them which it states on the internet can be a reason for it.

I am going to see my dentist tomorrow for a check up and going to mention it and then my orthodontist next week as I still have a brace behind my upper teeth.

I have read that it could be TMJ? Not sure though.

    Hi Steamer

sorry to hear about your jaw; I suspect a lot of people have this and just 'get on with it'. My understanding is that it is far from a simple matter to deal with but in some cases is can be addressed.

I will PM you at some point with my progress and would appreciate it if you let me know if you make any progress with your own clicking.

My dentist said that there is no "one" solution for this. He ruled out grinding and clenching etc. He also measured the clicking and how far I can open my jaw which turns out to not be that far, I didn't even notice to be honest that it had become that bad. I have to go back to him next week for a filling after my orthodontic appointment so he said that he might refer me to someone then. I am going to say it to the orthodonist too and see if he refers me etc.

My jaw is aching these days more than usual, I feel that it's probably just because it's on my mind now :(

I've had it over 10 years. The specialist I went to see said nothing could be done about it. It has stayed at the same level since I got it.

I've had this too for about 8 years or so. I said it to my dentist at the time & he said it'd probably never go away & once it happens it'll usually be like that for life.

He did say exercises could help though & gave me a sheet with a few jaw exercises to do. I never really bothered doing them & while it's still as bad, I don't really notice it much anymore.

So went to my orthodontist, mentioned it to him. He said to go through my dentist. I felt like asking him whether or not my orthodontic work caused it but I left it as I didn't want to get into it with him without knowing the true cause.

Went to the dentist this morning and he is referring me to a specialist, Dr.***mod edit** in Galway. More money but I want to sort this problem out sooner rather than later so that I don't have any bigger problems later in life :)

Steamer I have to edit out names as per the charter, however I know the specialist you named personally and he is a excellent clinician in this area.

Thanks fitzgeme, it's always good to get some reassurance. Sorry for mentioning the doc, won't do it again :)

I thought I was the only one whose jaw clicked when i opened my mouth!

What problems does it create later in life?
