Anyone swum out to Skellig Michael, or have pointers to more info about what might be involved in it? I've seen various descriptions of the island being anywhere from 10-15k off the coast of kerry.. but not much info on the water or tides.

No, I haven't swum there, and I don't think anyone has, but I have gone there by boat on occasions.

I think the closest distance to the mainland is about 12 km.

No idea about currents and tides but the water is very choppy, even on a calm day - at that's on a boat. On most days the wind direction would be right against you (that's if you swim from the mainland to Skellig Michael). It would take a hell of a swimmer to get there.

Ned was very helpful. Two swimmers have swim FROM skellig michael to portmagee (19k) in 2007 (Rob Bohane) and 2009 (Owen Kiely (wetsuit)); and hes swum around the island himself. He suggested swimming to the island would be more difficult than from the island for a few reasons too. Thanks for the pointer!
